Piedmont upends No. 6 BSC in extra innings, 2-1

DEMOREST, Ga.—A two-out walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted Piedmont over No. 6 Birmingham-Southern, 2-1, Wednesday evening in Demorest, Ga.

The Panthers fell to 24-6-1, while the Lions moved to 18-11.

After two scoreless innings, BSC got on the board in the top of the third. Senior David Bourbonnais led off with a double, followed by a single from senior Casey Lambert to put runners on the corners. After that a sacrifice bunt by senior Brandon Marino brought Bourbonnais home.

Senior starter Paul Caudill held Piedmont hit-less through four complete innings, giving up two of the Lions' six hits in the bottom of the fifth including an RBI double to tie things up.

Piedmont threatened in the bottom of the eighth, getting runners to first and third with one out on the board, but Bourbonnais, who came in to start the inning, struck out the next two batters to preserve the tie.

The Panthers also had a chance in the top of the 10th, loading the bases before sophomoreNathan Qualls was thrown out at home after a wild pitch allowed the runners on first and second to advance. Senior Jacob Mayfield drew a walk after that to re-load the bases with one out, but Piedmont hurler Josh Thomas retired the next two batters.

In the bottom of the 10th, Piedmont got runners on first and second with two outs before a single by Breck Davidson brought in the game-ending run.

Caudill went 5.1 innings, giving up three hits and one earned run with one strikeout. JuniorWilson Jamison pitched the next 1.2 innings, followed by Bourbonnais (1-1) taking the loss in the final 2.2 innings, allowing three hits and one earned run with seven strikeouts. Bourbonnais and Lambert were both 2-3 at the plate.

The Panthers return home for the final home conference series of the season this weekend, hosting Rhodes College with games at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. Sunday will also be Senior Day for BSC's nine seniors.
