GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Jack Wyman drove in the game-winning run with a double in the seventh inning as Albion College rallied from three runs down in posting a 6-4 victory over Calvin College in the first game of a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association baseball doubleheader.
Briton starter Craig Conway (3-2) did a good job of limiting damage as the first Calvin batters in the first and third innings reached on throwing errors and the Knights got a leadoff single in the second. All three runners scored as Calvin led, 3-0, after three innings.
The Britons started chipping away at the deficit in the fourth. Michael Fischbach, who was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk in the game, started the inning with an infield single. Fischbach stole second and came around to score when Steven Marowski laced a one-out double to left field. Spencer Bonofiglio followed with a RBI single to bring Marowski in to score.
Patrick Avila led off the Calvin fifth inning with a double and he scored on Ben Wohl's sacrifice fly as the Knights led 4-2.
Albion forged a 4-4 tie in the sixth as Marowski hit his third homerun of the season, a solo shot to left-center, and Ronnie Williams III scored on a wild pitch.
Fischbach scored the winning run in the seventh. He drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on Wyman's double. Wyman came in with an insurance run when Williams singled down the left field line.
Conway departed after 105 pitches and runners on first and second. Gunnar Owens induced Jeff Murdock into grounding into a double play for his school-record sixth save of the season.
Conway, who picked up his first victory over a MIAA rival this season, punched out six. He allowed four runs (two earned) on nine hits and two walks.
