Long Balls and Landry's Arm Propels WPI to Series-Opening Won Over Coast Guard

New London, CT --- Senior Taylor Landry (Kennebunk, ME) pitched seven quality innings and the WPI offense hit four homers en route to an 11-2 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game, the first of a three-game weekend series.

Landry (4-2) pitched seven innings and allowed four hits and a pair of earned runs while walking three and striking out eight to get the win.

WPI won its fourth straight to improve to 15-10 overall and 6-5 in the NEWMAC while Coast Guard dropped its fourth straight to dip to 10-6 overall and 3-4 in conference play.

Senior Zach Blanchard (Warwick, RI) junior John Mulready (Rockland, MA), junior Sean Greene (Hingham, MA) and junior Alex Venditti (Newton, MA) all homered in the Engineers 14 hit outburst.

Blanchard hit a solo homer to left in the first to open the scoring  while Greene and Mulready each added solo shots in the fifth as WPI took a 4-0 lead.

Trailing 5-0, Coast Guard got both of its runs in the sixth on an RBI triple by sophomore Brendan McNeil (Pawcatuck, CT), who later scored on an RBI ground out by junior Ed Lazowski (Mount Joy, PA) to make the score 5-2.

The Engineers blew the game open with five runs in the eighth as sophomore Nick Comei (Haverhill, MA) had an RBI single, junior Vinny D'Ambrosio (Mahopac, NY) added a two-run single and Vendetti capped the inning with a two-run home run to left to make the score 10-2.

WPI added a run in the ninth when Vendetti was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Greene was 3 for 5 to lead the WPI offense while D'Ambrosio, Mulready, graduate student Sean Kelly (Shrewsbury, MA) and Blanchard each added two hits in the win.

Sophomore Colton Cannon (Kennesaw, GA) (1-2) took the loss for the Bears, he pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed eight hits and five runs, all earned, while walking three and striking out three.

Coast Guard had just five hits in the game.

These teams will conclude the three-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow at Assumption College in Worcester at noon.
