Golden Bears take two from Bison

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Nichols College baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader with Western New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play Saturday afternoon at Trelease Park.

Freshmen Spencer Madden (Nashua, N.H.), Cam Cook (Phoenixville, Pa.), and Ross Casswell (Randolph, Vt.) each had three hits combined in the doubleheader in which the Bison dropped Game 1, 13-1 and Game 2, 9-6.

Game One: Western New England 13, Nichols 1

Cook led the Bison with two hits on the day while Madden and junior Joseph Nicolace (Cranston, R.I.) each had a hit as Nichols found itself outhit by WNEU 12-4 on the game.

Sophomore Kyle Maglio (Glastonburry, Conn.) and junior Doug Milne (Neconset, N.Y.) each drove in three runs while junior Kevin Marciano (Pepperell, Mass.) scored three runs to pace the Golden Bears.

The Bison (1-8, 0-4 CCC) struck first when in the bottom of the first inning sophomore Mike Piekarczyk (Dudley, Mass.)grounded into a fielder's choice to the shortstop which scored freshman Brendan Martin (Nashua, N.H.).

The Golden Bears (8-10, 5-3 CCC) exploded for the next 13 runs including five runs in both the second and seventh innings.

Freshman StigErik McElhinney (Dracut, Mass.) falls to 1-2 on the season after pitching four innings and allowing seven runs (five earned) on eight hits while walking one and striking out one.

Junior David Cherry (Southbury, Conn.) pitched a solid six innings for the Golden Bears. He allowed one unearned run on four hits while walking three and striking out six.

Game Two: Western New England 9, Nichols 6

WNEU struck for five runs in the first inning to take Game 2 of the doubleheader against Nichols, 9-6.

Sophomore Adam Rigney (Niantic, Conn.) settled down after the first inning but still takes the loss and falls to 0-2 on the year. He allowed seven runs (six earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out one through 5.1 innings.

Junior Tom Mahoney (Granville, Mass.) was impressive for the Golden Bears allowing just two runs on five hits and walking one with two strikeouts in five innings of work. He improves to 3-1 this season.

The Bison outhit the Golden Bears 9-8 and were led by Madden with two hits and two runs scored while Casswell had three hits and crossed the plate once. Freshman Nick Roy (Middletown, Conn.) chipped in with two hits and one RBI while four other student-athletes drove in runs for Nichols.

Sophomore Daniel Morin (Salem, N.H.) and senior Steve Buckley (Monroe, Conn.) each had two hits while junior Matt Calzone (Middlebury, Conn.) drove in three runs to lead the Golden Bears.

The Bison travel to take on conference foe Curry on Monday at 2:00 p.m. The Golden Bears play at Endicott Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
