No. 10-ranked St. Thomas used a grand slam and a three-run inside-the-park homer en route to a 12-3 game-two win over visiting St. Scholastica and a split of Sunday's non-conference baseball doubleheader in St. Paul.

The Saints scored eight runs in the first inning of game one and went on to a 9-2 victory.

The Tommies (16-8) broke to a 5-0 lead in the third inning on Brady Johnson's triple, a walk, freshman Zach Gottfredsen's RBI single, a hit batter and Ben Waltz' grand slam onto Cretin Avenue in left field. Waltz, a junior, was making just his 13th varsity plate appearance as a collegian when he drilled a ball high towards the fence and watched a gusty wind do the rest. Waltz finished the day 4-for-7 with five RBI.

UST freshman Drew Molin was cruising after four shutout innings before he allowed two singles and Jordan Risse's three-run home run onto the same street in left to cut the lead to 5-3. UST's Dominic Reed came on in relief and got the last nine outs for a save as he walked one, allowed one hit, and struck out three.

St. Thomas scored seven insurance runs after two were out in the sixth inning with a triple, double, Gottfredsen's three-run inside-the-park HR, and Anthony Winters' two-run homer.
