Explosive Offense Catapults Gators to NCAC Sweep

HIRAM, Ohio – The Gators erupted for 24 total runs on 35 hits, including five home runs from three different batters, en route to a pair of Sunday wins over Hiram that awarded Allegheny a four-game sweep of the Terriers and a strong statement in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) East Standings.  Allegheny won the first game, 9-3, before responding to a late three run deficit with seven runs in the eighth and five runs in the ninth en route to a 15-7 triumph in game two.

Sophomore Jacob Shick launched three home runs on Sunday, including a pair of blasts in the nightcap, closing out the doubleheader with five RBI to go along with five hits.  Freshman Tyler Wagner hit the first home run of his career in game one, following it up with another blast in the nightcap to finish the afternoon with six total hits.  In the first game, freshman Dan Bonnett picked up his first career home run, ending game one with three runs on three hits and a pair of RBI before tacking on an additional hit and run in game two.

Junior Joe Killian provided spark as the third hitter in the lineup, driving in three runs in both games to finish the series batting .353 with 10 total RBI, a team-high.  Senior Zach Gray went 4-for-4 in game one, driving in and scoring a run, as classmate Adam Bronson scattered a pair of hits in the Gators in game one, picking up three in game two.  Freshman Cullen Flaherty went 4-for-5 in game two, scoring a pair of runs.

Sophomore Corey Keenan picked up the game one victory, going five innings for the Gators and striking out four batters.  Senior Paul Vojtek earned the win in game two, hurling three innings of two-hit shutout baseball, striking out a batter for the Gators.

Bonnett set the tone for the Gators in game one, leading off the top of the first with a single to right and scoring after a sacrifice fly from Killian.  Gray, who doubled to right center after Bonnett's lead-off single, scored off of a single by Bronson to give the Gators the early, 2-0 lead. 

Wagner kicked off the second in electric fashion, leading off the inning by taking the 1-0 pitch to left center, putting the Gators ahead, 3-1.  Flaherty doubled with one-out in the inning before Gray scored his second hit of the game, driving in Flaherty for another Gator run. 

Hiram held the Gators scoreless to the third, but Bonnett got the Gators back on the scoreboard with a home run to left.  The freshman struck again with a single to center in the fifth to score Wagner, who singled to lead off the inning.  Killian drove in two runs for the Gators to close out the fifth, as Allegheny entered the final stanza of game one with a six-run lead. 

Shick scored the Gators' ninth run of the game on the first pitch of the sixth, as sophomore Zach Hale entered in relief in the bottom of the frame, holding Hiram scoreless before freshman Cy Perry shut the door with a scoreless seventh.

The Terriers erupted for a 7-0 lead four innings into the game, as the Gators began their comeback in the fifth.  A lead-off single by Flaherty turned into a run as a fielder's choice by Gray allowed the freshman to cross the plate and get the Gators on the board.  A bunt single by Shick led off the sixth, as a sacrifice fly by sophomore Patrick Orr plated the sophomore to award the Gators their second run.  The squad's third came courtesy of a bases loaded hit-by-pitch to Bronson, which scored Gray to reduce the Hiram lead to four runs.

In the eighth, the Gators scored seven runs on six hits, taking the lead in the final stanza.  A lead-off single by Murray set the tone, as a single by Flaherty and a hit-by-pitch to junior Matt Sardiniloaded the bases.  A one-out single to center by Gray brought home Flaherty and pinch runnerAndrew Dawson, as Shick hit the first of two home runs two batters latter, scoring Killian to give the Gators the lead at 8-7.  A two-run home run by Wagner increased the Gator lead to three.

A two-run single by Killian followed by another two-run shot by Shick plated four runs for the Gators in the top of the ninth.  A single by Wagner to score Bronson closed out the Allegheny scoring.  Senior Matt Jankowiak appeared in the bottom of the ninth and closed the door on the Terriers.

Allegheny will next travel to University Heights, Ohio to battle John Carroll at 4 p.m. on April 15th before returning home to take on Thiel at 4 p.m. on April 16th.  On Saturday, the Gators will clash with NCAC East rival Oberlin in a four-game series that starts at 12 p.m. in Oberlin, Ohio.
