New Paltz Baseball Drops Series Opener to Fredonia, 7-3

NORTH COLLINS, N.Y. – Despite holding a 3-2 lead after five innings of play, the State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team could not hold on to the advantage and fell to SUNY Fredonia 7-3 on Saturday afternoon at North Collins High School in North Collins, N.Y.
 
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 3-14 overall and 0-7 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play. The Blue Devils move to 8-9 overall and 3-2 in the SUNYAC as the teams will conclude the weekend series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
 
For the afternoon, New Paltz cracked 10 hits but managed just three runs and left six runners stranded. Junior shortstop Andrew DiNardo (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill), senior first baseman Shaun Hansen(Southold, N.Y./Greenport), sophomore designated hitter Anthony Diana (North Amawalk, N.Y./Somers) and senior outfielder Richard Guido (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) all notched two hits apiece. DiNardo drove in two runs while Guido accounted for the Hawks' other RBI.
 
Junior right-hander Christian Huertas (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) earned the starting nod and threw 6 1/3 frames, scattering 11 hits while allowing four runs and striking out two. Senior southpaw Roy Missall (Hemlock, N.Y./Honeoye Central) appeared in relief and threw 1 2/3 innings for New Paltz.
 
Fredonia enjoyed 15 hits and had five players with at least two hits, led by Ricky Mendiola and Dan Cecilia, who both registered three hits each. Steve Sturm threw six innings for the victory while Joe DiLeo finished the game, going three frames while allowing just one hit for the save.
 
New Paltz fell behind 1-0 after allowing a two-out run scoring single to the Blue Devils in the second. But the bats came alive for the Hawks in the top of the fifth as Hansen and Diana both ripped singles to lead off the frame. After the next two batters recorded outs, Guido tallied a run-scoring infield hit, Jake Williams (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) followed with a single through the left side and DiNardo capped the rally off with a two-run single to hand New Paltz a 3-1 edge.
 
Fredonia answered in the bottom of the fifth with a lead-off triple and infield single to climb within 3-2. In the bottom of the sixth, the Blue Devils tacked on two runs on two hits to take a 4-3 lead.
 
The contest remained scoreless until the bottom of the eighth when Fredonia notched three more insurance runs on four hits to put the Hawks in a 7-3 hole.
