Marietta rolls over Mount Union

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Etta Express rolled to an Ohio Athletic Conference baseball sweep of visiting Mount Union Sunday (April 12) evening at Don Schaly Stadium. Marietta came from behind to win the first game 11-10 in 10 innings and then cruised to an 18-5 victory in the nightcap.

Marietta improves to 15-11 on the season and 6-4 in the OAC. Mount Union slips to 15-10 overall and 4-6 in conference games.

The Pioneers needed a little Schaly Stadium magic in game one. Trailing 10-9 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning senior Mitch Geers laced a single to center bringing the tying run to the plate. Ryan Hanahan launched a two-run shot over the leftfield wall sending the game into extra innings.

Freshman David Stover needed just four pitches to retire the Purple Raiders in order in the top of the tenth. Stover (1-0) earned his first career win tossing 5.0 shutout innings of relief. Aided by a pair of double plays, Stover faced one batter over the minimum.

Eric White led off the home half of the tenth with a base hit to left. Michael Barnabei ran for White and moved into scoring position on a sac bunt by Chris Petrucci. Mount Union intentionally walked Chris Winpigler to set up the double play.

Purple Raider pitcher Scott Chase got the ground ball from Doug Bennett but the throw to second was wild and all hands were safe loading the bases with one out. Tyler Packanik completed the comeback with a single up the middle scoring Barnabei with the winning run.

Chase (1-2) took the loss. He pitched 3.0 innings and allowed three runs on six hits. Josh Pryor started and worked 5.0 innings giving up six runs on 11 hits.

Tyler Nieberding started on the mound for the Pioneers and pitched 3.0 innings. He was charged with five runs on eight hits. Mike Fulton tossed 2.0 innings and allowed five runs on five hits before turning the game over to Stover.

Hanahan, Geers, White and Petrucci each had three hits in the game for the Pioneers. The Etta Express collected 19 hits in the game including seven doubles and Hanahan's home run.

Once the Express left the station it continued to roll the rest of the evening. Marietta exploded for 12 runs in the first three innings of game two en route to a 18-run, 20-hit performance.

Hanahan continued to swing the hot bat going 4-for-4 with three RBI a double and his team-leading sixth home run of the season. The senior third baseman was a combined 7-for-9 in the doubleheader with seven RBI, six runs scored, two doubles and two home runs.

Freshman Austin Eaton (3-1) started and went 7.0 strong innings to get the win. He allowed three runs on 10 hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Mitch McNabb worked the final 2.0 innings allowing two runs on four hits.

Noah Skladan (2-1) took the loss for Mount throwing 1.1 innings and giving up seven runs on five hits. Four other Purple Raiders toed the rubber in the game.

In addition to Hanahan, Tim McCoy collected three hits including a double, a home run and three RBI. Freshman Brandon Papp was 3-for-5, while Geers, Winpigler Bennett and Connor Golden each had two hits.

Marietta plays at Capital University on Tuesday (April 14) in a 1:00 p.m. OAC doubleheader.
