Bison win first conference game in split with Colonels

MILTON, Mass. – Freshman Nick Roy (Middletown, Conn.) drove in three runs on three hits in a win as the Nichols College baseball team split a doubleheader with Curry in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Monday afternoon at D. Forbes Will Field.

The Bison exploded for their most runs since the 2004 season – 21-8 against Eastern Nazarene – in Game 1 to top the Colonels 18-15 before dropping Game 2, 5-2.

Game 1 – Nichols 18, Curry 15

Eight different student-athletes had hits for the Bison as they pick up their first conference win of the season. Roy and freshman Nick Osma (Babylon, N.Y.) each had three hits while freshmen Spencer Madden (Nashua, N.H.) and Johnny Doyon (Meriden, Conn.) and sophomore Mike Piekarczyk (Dudley, Mass.) each had two hits as the Bison improve to 2-9 (1-5 CCC).

The Colonels were led by junior Tim Lathrop (Colchester, Conn.) who went 4-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Freshman Anthony Sciaudone (York, Maine) added three hits and three runs while junior Philip Perez (West Covina, Calif.) drove in three runs on two hits.

Nichols started the game scoring eight unanswered runs before Curry (12-6, 5-2 CCC) put three runs on the board in the bottom of the third. The Bison answered right back with four runs in the top of the fourth including back-to-back RBI triples by Madden and Osma.

The Colonels cut the deficit to a three-run game after a six-run fifth. Curry rattled off seven consecutive hits including an RBI-double by senior R.J. McCann (Brockton, Mass.) that chased Bison starter freshman Vincent Amato (Brooklyn, N.Y.)from the game.

 The Bison answered with six runs of their own in their next at-bat, including a 2-RBI double to center field by Roy that scored freshmen Brendan Martin (Nashua, N.H.) and Cam Cook (Phoenixville, Pa.).

Amato picked up his first collegiate victory after tossing 4.1 innings allowing nine runs (seven earned) on ten hits while walking three and striking out two. Sophomore Mike Reiher (Ramsey, N.J.) took the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits.

Game 2 – Curry 5, Nichols 2

Freshman Zach Morgillo (Hamden, Conn.) only allowed three hits through five innings of work but took the loss as the Colonels bounced back with a 5-2 win in Game 2 of the doubleheader.

Senior Tanner Givens (Hamden, Conn.) tossed seven strong innings for the Colonels improving to 1-1 on the year. Givens allowed just two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out two and walking none.

Cook paced the Bison with a pair of hits including a RBI-single in the top of the seventh which scored Doyon to put the score at 5-2.

The Colonels managed five runs (two earned) on just three hits including a RBI-single by sophomore Alex McLean (Eliot, Maine) that scored junior John Arens (Milton, Mass.) and freshman William De La Cruz (Bronx, N.Y.).

The Bison host Becker tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m. The Colonels host Bridgewater State on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
