RICHMOND, Ind. — Another game-winner in the ninth inning.

For the second straight day, the Earlham College baseball team got a run-scoring single in the ninth to post a 3-2 victory.

The victim on Wednesday was Spalding University as Ethan Bailey stroked the walk-off single for the Quakers in Randal R. Sadler Stadium. Earlham won at Mount St. Joseph University on Tuesday on a hit by Thomas Rea.

Earlham is now 22-6, which sets a new standard for wins in a season during the NCAA era. It's also the third best total in school history behind the 1970 (26) and 1971 (24) teams.

The Quakers scored in the first inning to grab an early advantage on a RBI single by Brandon Smalling.

In the second frame, the Quakers made it 2-0 after Matt Barger knocked in a run with a single.

The scored remained the same until the Golden Eagles (16-10) picked up a run in the eighth. Spalding tied the contest in the top of the ninth against Earlham pitcher Howie Smith.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Nate Lynch started the winning rally with a single. After he stole second, Rea was hit by a pitch to set the stage for Bailey, who hit an 0-2 pitch into left field to produce the decisive run.

Smith (4-0) picked up the win as he finished the ninth inning on the mound for the Quakers. He gave up a run on a hit with a strikeout.

Earlham starter Kyle Agius worked five scoreless innings and gave up five hits with four strikeouts. Drew Lively tossed the sixth and seventh before leaving with two outs in the eighth. He surrendered a run on three hits. Matt Mathies retired the final hitter of the eighth with a strikeout.

The Quakers return to action on Saturday with a doubleheader against the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. The opener of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference series starts at 1 p.m.

Saturday is also the official dedication of Randal R. Sadler Stadium, which begins at 12:30 p.m.
