NORTH COLLINS, N.Y. - The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team salvaged a split against SUNY Fredonia on Sunday, falling in game one 6-5 before picking up a 12-10 win in game two at North Collins High School.
With the split, the Hawks move to 4-15 overall and 1-8 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC). New Paltz will prepare to host Union on Tuesday, April 14 at 7 p.m. Fredonia, meanwhile, moves to 9-10, 4-2 SUNYAC and will host No. 2 SUNY Cortland in a three-game series starting on Monday, April 13.
Fredonia 6, New Paltz 5 (Game One)
The Hawks were enjoying a 5-2 lead entering the last inning of play but surrendered four runs in the bottom of the seventh to Fredonia to fall 6-5.
Senior right-hander Shaun Hansen (Southold, N.Y./Greenport) earned the start and pitched well, going five frames while allowing two earned runs and striking out five.
Offensively, New Paltz registered eight hits with the top of the order accounting for four base knocks. Leadoff hitter, freshman Jake Williams (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) finished 2-for-3 with a run while junior shortstop Andrew DiNardo(Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) continued his hot hitting as of late with a 2-for-3 performance with two RBI and two runs scored.
Junior catcher Tyler Bell (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), senior third baseman Mike Sparacino (Commack, N.Y./Commack), sophomore Anthony Diana (North Amawalk, N.Y./Somers) and freshman Anthony Pantano(Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) provided the additional hits as Diana drove in the Hawks' other run in game one.
Fredonia grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second by leading off with a triple and eventually getting on the scoreboard on a RBI groundout. But the Hawks responded in the top of the third with a two-out rally.
Williams cracked a single and stole second and DiNardo followed with an RBI single and was waved around to touch home after an error by the Blue Devils' right fielder to take a 2-1 lead.
Sparacino began the sixth with a triple and was brought in thanks to a Diana single two batters later to give New Paltz a 3-1 advantage. But Fredonia answered with a run in the bottom of the inning, leading off with another triple and scoring on a single to inch within 3-2.
In the top of the seventh, the Hawks tallied two runs to take a 5-2 edge as DiNardo ripped an RBI double and later scored on a wild pitch. But these insurance runs would not hold up, unfortunately, for New Paltz as Fredonia rallied with a four-run seventh to hand the Hawks the come-from-behind loss.
New Paltz 12, Fredonia 10 (Game Two)
The bats came alive for the Hawks in game two as New Paltz tallied 12 runs on 11 hits to come away with the game two win.
Williams led the way with a 3-for-5 performance, scoring two runs and driving in another. Bell collected two hits and drove in a game-high four RBI while DiNardo continued his great hitting weekend, adding two more hits and three RBI. Diana and freshman Chris Amato (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) both added two hits apiece with Amato driving in two runs.
Senior lefty Brian Solomon (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) earned the win as the southpaw three eight frames and struck out six Blue Devils. Senior Tyler Mitts (Nanuet, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep) threw the final frame for his first save of the year.
The Hawks trailed 1-0 after one inning of action but managed to score three runs in the top of the second as Amato and Williams registered run-scoring singles to give New Paltz a 3-1 lead. But Fredonia tallied two runs in both the second and third innings to reclaim a 5-3 lead.
New Paltz bounced back in the fourth and scored three more times to regain a 6-5 edge. Bell came through with the big hit, a bases-clearing single to score DiNardo, Williams and freshman Ryan Bowser (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac).
After Fredonia notched another run to tie game at 6-6, the Hawks managed to plate an additional four more runs in the fifth to go ahead 10-6, all with two outs. DiNardo came through with a two-run single and Bell followed suit with a run-scoring double to give New Paltz the four-run lead.
In the top of the sixth, New Paltz added another run to take an 11-7 lead. Fredonia added a score in the eighth to cut within 11-8 and with the Hawks leading 12-8 entering the ninth, the Blue Devils plated two more runs but Mitts managed to strike out the final batter to escape with the win, snapping an eight-game losing skid.
