Fishman Leads Union to Saturday Sweep of St. Lawrence

SCHENECTADY, NY - Sophomore Jake Fishman tossed a complete-game one-hitter in a 5-0 win in game one and went 6-for-7 at the plate, driving in two runs in game two as Union took the first two games of the series against St. Lawrence 5-0 and 6-4. With his six hits, the sophomore now leads all Division III hitters with a .549 average.

GAME 1

Just three balls left the infield as Fishman dominated the Saints to earn his third victory of the season. It was his fifth complete game of the season and his second shutout on the year. He allowed just a two-out single in the third to go along with three walks and three hit batters. He struck out three Saint hitters in the outing.

The Dutchmen scored one run in five of their six innings en route to the 5-0 victory. Eric Egan had a sac fly in the first and another one in the fifth to give him a team-high two RBIs. He unfortunately went 0-for-1 in the game as his 17 game hitting streak was snapped.

Union added another run in the second as Fishman scored as Ryan McGeown-Conron grounded into a 6-4-3 doubleplay. Andy Labeck singled up the middle in the fourth to bring home Kent Curran to make it 3-0 and Fishman scored his second run of the game to make it 5-0 in the sixth after a failed pick attempt sailed into centerfield.

GAME 2

The "U" jumped out to a 4-0 lead with four runs in the third inning. Faber opened the scoring with an RBI single to bring in CJ Worley. Three batters later Fishman singled to left to score Faber and Curran. and Labeck followed with a single to left as well to allow Fishman to cross home plate.

St. Lawrence responded one run in the fourth and three runs in the fifth off starter Ryan Kuchar to knot the game at 4-4. 

With one out and Labeck on third, Worley laid down a perfect bunt with Labeck breaking for the plate. Labeck beat the tag from the SLU catcher to put Union in front 5-4. The Dutchmen added an insurance run in the eighth as Chris Carbone came in to score after Nate Olson reached on a fielding error by the Saints' second basemen.

The Union relief core of Eric Beer, Faber and Bill Christopher allowed just four hits in four scoreless innings to help Union to the 6-4 win. Christopher gave up just a two-out bloop single to pick up his fifth save of the season.

The Dutchmen and St. Lawrence will conclude their four-game series tomorrow at 12pm. At 11:30am prior to the first pitch, Union will be honoring their 2013 and 2014 Liberty League Championship teams will a pre-game ceremony. Make sure to come out to Central Park for the festivities.
