Hawks take two from Bison

DUDLEY, Mass. – The Nichols College baseball team dropped a pair of two-run games to Roger Williams in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore Mike Piekarczyk (Dudley, Mass.) drove in three runs and score a couple of his own on the day as the Bison fell to the Hawks in Game 1, 8-6, and in Game 2, 7-5.

Game 1 – Roger Williams 8, Nichols 6

Junior Troy DeLeon (East Hampton, Conn.) earned his third win after tossing a complete game for the Hawks as they defeat the Bison 8-6.

DeLeon allowed six runs (three earned) through seven innings of work and allowed ten hits while walking two and striking out seven.

Piekarczyk went 3-for-4 with three RBI's including RBI-singles in both the first and seventh innings. Freshman Nick Osma (Babylon, N.Y.) had two hits and drove in a run while classmate Nick Roy (Middletown, Conn.) had two hits and scored twice.

Freshman Matt Moskal (Hamden, Conn.) paced the Hawks with three hits to go with two RBI's and one run. Junior Shawn Cariglio (Milford, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with two runs and a RBI-single through the right side in the top of the third to give the Hawks their first lead of the game, 4-3.

After the Bison tied it up in their half of the inning on a Piekarczyk single through the right side scoring Roy, Roger Williams added two runs in the fourth and fifth innings to make the score 8-4.

The Bison fought back in the bottom of the seventh with a couple runs to bring it to 8-6 and had runners at the corners before DeLeon struck out freshman Ross Caswell (Randolph, Vt.) to close out the game.

Freshman Kevin Kirley (Clinton, Mass.) took the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) through four innings of work while walking two and striking out none.

Game 2 – Roger Williams 7, Nichols 5

The Bison (5-14-1, 2-9-1 CCC) held a 5-1 lead before allowing four runs in the fourth and two runs in the seventh inning to drop the back end of the doubleheader with the Hawks, 7-5.

Sophomore Tim Ford (Stafford Springs, Conn.) led the Bison with RBI-singles to right field in the second and third innings that scored Piekarczyk each time.
Sophomore Matt Hardy (North Attleboro, Mass.) added two hits, including a RBI-single through the left side in the third inning.

The Hawks (13-16, 8-6 CCC) received a stellar pitching performance from junior Eric Proulx (Charlton, Mass.). Sophomore Kaelan Rayner (Westerly, R.I.) started the game and allowed five runs on seven hits through 2.2 innings. Proulx pitched the final 4.1 innings and allowed no runs on one hits while walking one and striking out two on his way to his first win of the year.

Freshman Nick Limoges (Easthampton, Mass.) took the loss after pitching the final 3.1 innings and allowing two runs on five hits.

Junior Kevin Baker (Wilbraham, Mass.) started out the top of the seventh inning with a blast to deep left center field that hopped over the fence for a ground-rule double. Senior Reid Nelson (Wallingford, Conn.) followed that up with a bunt-single to put runners at the corners.

A passed ball from Caswell scored Baker and allowed Nelson to move to second which he scored during the same at-bat on a single down the left field line by sophomore Bryan Terzian (Westport, Conn.) to put the game at 7-5.

The Bison host WPI on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. The Hawks travel to take on UMass-Dartmouth on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
