Hood's Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short Against No. 2 Frostburg St.

FREDERICK, Md. - Hood scored twice in the ninth inning and brought the winning run to home plate before No. 2 Frostburg State was able to escape with a 5-2 win.

The Blazers trailed 5-0 before mounting a two-out rally in the ninth. Daniel Patterson (Brunswick, Md. / Brunswick) was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a single by pinch hitter Nat Puryear (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora). Nick Meyer (Knowlton, N.J. / North Warren Regional) followed with a walk to load the bases.Cameron Esposito (Columbia, N.J. / North Warren Regional) got Hood on the board with a base hit to left that scored the first run. A base on balls by Brooks Warrenfeltz (Middletown, Md. / Middletown) drove in another run to make it 5-2 and brought the winning run to the plate. 

FSU reliever Tyler Hoffman settled down and got a fly ball to center to end the threat. 

Most of the scoring came in the first inning on back-to-back homers by the Bobcats' Zach Weiss and Nick Walker to make it 3-0. Hood traded a run for a double play in the fourth as Frostburg went ahead 4-0. The final run for the Bobcats scored on an RBI single by Ricky Castro in the ninth that knocked in Greg Schneider.

Cameron Fitzgerald (Bowie, Md. / DeMatha Catholic) pitched the first five innings and took the loss. He allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks, striking out two. The bullpen pitched four innings and allowed just one run on four hits and did not walk a batter. Andrew Catone (Jacksonville, Fla. / Stanton College Prep) pitched a scoreless sixth. Jake Franke (Lisbon, Md. / Glenelg) was perfect in the seventh, striking out two. Jackson Slotterback (Arnold, Md. / St. Mary's) blanked FSU in the eighth before Kole Hearn (Seaford, Del. / Sussex Tech) allowed the final run in the ninth. 

Esposito singled and walked in the game.

Frostburg's first four hitters all had at least two hits, led by Walker, who went 3-for-4. Greg Schneider, Castro and Weiss each had two hits. The Blazers fared better against the final five spots in the order, holding those hitters to just 2-of-17 in the game. 

Ryan Callahan picked up the win. He pitched 5.1 innings of three-hit ball. He struck out six and walked two. Four relievers combined to finish the game.

Hood wraps up Commonwealth Conference play with a three-game series against Lebanon Valley on April 24-25. The Blazers play host to the Dutchmen for a single game on Friday, before the teams head to Annville, Pa. for a Saturday doubleheader.
