MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The Mitchell College baseball team upset No. 21 Wesleyan University by a 5-3 final on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference showdown.

The Mariners, who entered the game ranked third in the nation in win percentage, improved to 22-3 overall. The win marked Mitchell's second ever against a nationally-ranked opponent, coming on the heels of last season's victory over Eastern Connecticut State University in the NCAA Regional. The Cardinals (18-7 overall) were ranked 21st in the latest Collegiate Baseball DIII Poll as well as No. 1 in New England in the latest NEIBA Coaches Poll.

Ryan Goodwin went 2-for-3 with three RBI and knocked in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning to put Mitchell on top for good. Neftali Arroyo added a solo homer in the ninth for insurance, but Domenick Giaramida didn't allow a hit in 2.0 innings of relief to secure the win.

Mitchell took a 2-0 lead in the fourth on a single by Goodwin that plated both Kenneth Olszewski and Evan Peck. Jonathan Dennett homered in the bottom of the frame to put Wesleyan on the scoreboard and cut the margin to 2-1.

The Mariners bumped the lead back to two in the fifth on a RBI single by Gavin LaLima. The lead lasted until the sixth when a solo homer by Donnie Cimino and a RBI single by Ben Hoynes tied the game at 3-3.

Peck led off the Mitchell eighth with a single to left-center and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Rafael Garcia. Goodwin then followed with a single to center to bring Peck home with what turned out to be the winning run.

Arroyo led off the ninth with his team-leading second home run of the season. Then it was up to Giaramida to nail down the win, and he did so by setting down the side in order with a strikeout and two fly balls. He improved to 2-0 on the season.

Mitchell starter Eddie Santiago turned in 5.0 solid innings and yielded three runs on five hits. Al Jordan Johnson turned in 2.0 innings of scoreless relief and pitched out of a jam in the sixth to keep the game tied.

Mitchell returns to action with a conference doubleheader against Southern Vermont College on Saturday, April 25 at noon.
