THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime baseball team's offense reached new heights on Saturday afternoon as the team plated 43 runs in a two-game sweep of the Vaughn Warriors from the Reinhart Baseball Field.

The Privateers took game one by a record-setting 35-run performance, while winning the second game by an 8-1 score in the scheduled seven-inning game.

On the day, 10 Privateers had multi-RBI days with freshman Joe DiLeo (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann) leading the way with six on the twin bill. Senior Joe Longo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) was next in line as he drove in five. Sophomore Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) along with classmate Chris Stewart (Bethpage, N.Y./Chaminade) and freshmen Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) andBrian Hughes (Maspeth, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) all had three RBIs on the day.

In terms of batting average, senior Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) was a perfect 5-for-5, while junior Kevin Monahan (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur) was 4-for-4 with two extra-base hits. McLaughlin was also 2-for-2 as he played in the opener.

In addition to the strong at bats, Maritime also was a perfect 9-for-9 on stolen base attempts, while the team also walked 14 times and also reached base five times via hit batsmen. Junior Bruce Tyler (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) walked three times, and was plunked once to help his on-base percentage, in addition to his two hits.

The pitching was just as strong for the Privateers as freshman Anthony D'Ancona (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) got the benefit of his stellar offense with a five-inning shutout victory as he struck out nine Warriors in the opener as he picked up the win.

Senior Paul Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) got the start in game two and tossed three innings and allowed just one hit while striking out four. Junior Michael Oliva (Staten Island, N.Y./New Dorp) tossed a scoreless inning as he registered a strikeout while allowing just one hit en route to picking up the victory in relief.

Senior Ryan Heizman (Commack, N.Y./Commack) yielded one run on two hits, but did strike out a pair of batters in his two inning of work. Heizman bridged the gap to Sollin, who made his first-career pitching appearance and needed just 12 pitches to get out of the top of the seventh.

In game one, D'Ancona allowed a leadoff single, but retired the next three batters on seven pitches to bring up the Privateer offense for the first time. In the bottom of the first, 12 batters came to plate as Maritime exploded for seven first inning runs. The biggest hit in the frame came from DiLeo with a two-run single.

In the bottom of the second, Sollin set the tone with a leadoff triple and came home on a Monahan single. The Privateers added nine more in the inning with three coming off of a bases-clearing double by DiLeo to put Maritime ahead 17-0 going to the third.

After Vaughn made several changes to its starting nine, Maritime jumped on the new pitcher with nine more in the third. The team added nine more in the fourth inning with freshman pitcher Eric Kwiecinski (Commack, N.Y./St. Dominic) collecting a double, followed by pitchers Heizman, Hughes, Oliva and Pfundstein each having the opportunities to get plate appearances.

In the top of the fifth, D'Ancona allowed a leadoff single but struck out the side to put an end to the one-sided affair.

The second game saw Pfundstein in his more conventional position on the mound and allowed a one-out single before getting the last two batters with ease. Both sides went scoreless in their next go-arounds at the plate as the Privateers came up in the bottom of the second.

Galli led off the inning with a double to open the floodgates once again as Maritime plated five runs on six hits, which included RBIs from senior Pat Kirk (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep), Hughes, Pfundstein, DiLeo and Tyler. Maritime added a sixth run in the bottom of the third with a Kwiecinski groundout.

The Privateers plated two more runners in the bottom of the fourth as Stewart scored on a wild pitch, followed by DiLeo touching the plate after freshman Aaron Schiavoni (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) singled to make the score 8-0.

Meanwhile on the hill, Pfundstein cruised through his three innings before Oliva came on for the fourth without allowing a run. Heizman struck out a pair in the top of the fifth inning as the game progressed to the sixth.

Vaughn finally broke through with a leadoff single, stolen base and groundout to put the team's first run at third with one down. A sacrifice fly to centerfield allowed the first Warrior to come home as the run made the score 8-1 in favor of Maritime.

After playing numerous games behind the plate, and also seeing time in the field and as designated hitter, Sollin got his long-awaited pitching debut. After a leadoff walk, the Privateer defense gunned down the runner trying to steal second, followed by Sollin registering a strikeout. The last batter of the game singled, but was then thrown out as he too was trying to steal to end the day.

In game one, Maritime scored 35 runs on 26 hits, but modern program records. Sollin's five hits and five runs scored in the first game also tied a modern program record, while Longo and DiLeo fell one RBI shy of tying the single-game record.

Maritime (6-9, 1-3 Skyline) will look to keep its hot streak going on Wednesday afternoon as the team hosts Baruch on Reinhart Field beginning at 3:30 p.m.
