THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime baseball team fell at home to the Baruch Bearcats on the Reinhart Baseball Field by the score of 16-4 in non-conference action on Reinhart Field.

The Privateers collected seven hits on the night including two from senior Lenny Baldassare (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park). FreshmanChris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) collected one hit and also walked twice as he finished the game with two RBIs and two runs scored. Senior Joe Longo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and freshman Aaron Schiavoni (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson)also collected one RBI each in the effort.

Maritime used six pitchers in the game, with senior Ryan Alsdorf (Bethel, N.Y./Sullivan West) getting the nod to start the game in anticipation of his weekend start during the conference matchups. Freshmen Tyler Stuart (Palm Coast, Fla./Matanzas) andAnthony D'Ancona (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) were next out of the pen, followed by seniors Ryan Heizman (Commack, N.Y./Commack)James Very (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) and Paul Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park).

After hitting the first batter of the game with a pitch, Alsdorf settled down and struck out two of the next four batters to get out of the first unscathed while stranding a pair of Bearcats.

In the bottom of the first, Deddo led off the frame with a walk and was moved up to second on a groundout. Up next was Longo, who laced an RBI single to put the Privateers up by a 1-0 score. In the top of the second inning, the Bearcats rallied for three runs on four hits to takes their first lead of the game at 3-1.

Maritime's bats went down quietly in the second and third innings, as did Baruch in the top of the third. However the Bearcats tacked on a fourth run via a sacrifice fly to take a three-run lead. After two of the first three Baruch batters reached, D'Ancona came on for Stuart and walked the first batter he faced to load the bases. Baruch ended up with seven runs in the inning on a pair of booming doubles and a home run over the right field fence to take an 11-1 lead.

Heizman was next on the hill for Maritime in the top of the sixth and was touched up for four runs on three hits, while Maritime committed another error in the inning to allow Baruch to plate another four runs. A sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning gave the Bearcats a 15-run lead.

The Privateers were only able to get a few runners into scoring position as junior Bruce Tyler (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place)walked and stole second in the fifth inning. In the bottom of the seventh, Baldassare reached on a one out single and moved up to second on a Deddo walk, but Maritime was unable to get the key hit to get the offense going once again.

Senior Pat Kirk (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) also got into scoring position as he reached on a fielder's choice in the eighth inning, and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Tyler then followed with a walk, but a double play ended the threat quickly for the Privateers.

Very and Pfundstein pitched well to keep the Bearcats at bay and give the Maritime offense its chances. In the bottom of the ninth, sophomore Chris Stewart (Bethpage, N.Y./Chaminade) was hit by a pitch, followed by Baldassare collecting his second straight base knock. Deddo followed with a double to plate the pair of speedy outfielders, and later came around to score on a Schiavoni base hit. However, it was not enough as Baruch retired the final batter for the 16-4 win.
