Baseball Splits Conference Doubleheader vs. Mount St. Vincent

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. –The Maritime baseball team split a pair of conference games versus the Mount St. Vincent Dolphins on Saturday afternoon on the Reinhart Baseball Field. In game one, the Privateers won by a score of 6-3, before dropping game two by a final score of 3-0.

In game one, freshman Anthony D'Ancona (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) earned his third win of season as he did not allow a run over his four innings of work in relief. Freshman Tyler Stuart (Palm Coast, Fla./Matanzas) started and needed 108 pitches to get through the first five innings of the game as he allowed three earned runs on four hits.

Offensively in game one, freshman Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) led the team with three hits, followed by sophomore Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and freshman Joe DiLeo (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann) with two hits each. McLaughlin and senior Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) led the team in RBIs with two apiece.

In game one, Stuart set the side down in the top of the first to send his offense to bat in the bottom half of the inning. Deddo doubled to right center to lead off the inning, followed by McLaughlin collecting a base hit to drive Deddo home giving Maritime a 1-0 lead.

Mount St. Vincent scored two runs in the top of second to take its first lead of the game at 2-1, and added another run in the fourth to expand its lead to 3-1.

In the bottom half of the fourth, McLaughlin reached first base to lead off the inning. Senior Joe Longo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) replaced McLaughlin on base as he reached on a fielder's choice, and then advanced to second on a passed ball. Sollin then walked to put two on with one out, followed by a wild pitch to move the pair into scoring position. Up next was junior Kevin Monahan (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur), who recorded an RBI ground out, cutting the deficit to just one run.

In the Maritime fifth, freshman Joe DiLeo (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann) singled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a two-base error. Two batters later Deddo singled to bring home DiLeo from third, to tie up the game at three.

Maritime took the lead as it scored two runs in the sixth, when Sollin hit a two run homerun to right centerfield, giving Maritime a 5-3 lead, for his second round-tripper of the year and ninth of his career. The Privateers added an insurance run in the seventh as McLaughlin drove home freshman Connor Alwan (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) with the team's sixth run.

In Game two, strong pitching from senior Paul Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) along with freshman Brian Hughes(Maspeth, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) and senior James Very (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon), held the Dolphins to three hits. The Dolphins scored two runs in the 5th inning and add an insurance run in the 7th for the 3-0 win.

Pfundstein started and allowed two runs over 4 2/3 innings on 80 pitches as he took the hard luck loss. Hughes was next on the hill and struck out one batter of over his 1 1/3 innings worth of work. Very closed out the game and gave up a run in the top of the seventh as Mount St. Vincent came away with the victory.

Maritime (7-11, 2-4 Skyline) will be back in action on Sunday, April. 12, when they play the Knights of Mount St. Mary in a Skyline Conference doubleheader at 11 a.m. on the Reinhart Baseball Field.
 
Mount St. Vincent (7-17, 4-4 Skyline) will be back in action tomorrow as well, hosting the Fisher Falcons in Harrison, N.Y. at 11 a.m.
