Maritime Swept in Skyline Doubleheader by St. Joseph’s (LI)

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Maritime baseball team dropped both ends of their Skyline Conference doubleheader to the St. Joseph's (LI) Golden Eagles on Wednesday evening from Alfano Field on Long Island. The team lost the opener by a 12-2 score, followed by a 5-2 loss in the second game.
 
In the opener, the Privateers fought early in the game after St. Joseph's took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first off of Maritime freshman starting pitcher Brian Hughes (Maspeth, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy).
 
Maritime chipped away as sophomore Chris Stewart (Bethpage, N.Y./Chaminade) led off with a walk and moved up to second after a fielding error with senior Pat Kirk (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) batting. Senior Joe Longo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) reached on an infield single to tie the game, followed by sophomore Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) reaching on a fielder's choice to chase home Stewart.
 
Hughes settled down in the second and retired the Golden Eagles in order. The Privateer offense woke up again in the top of the third as junior Kevin Monahan (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur) was plunked to lead off the frame, senior Albert Doerbecker (Point Lookout, N.Y./Long Beach) singled to right to put two on with no outs. After a Stewart groundout moved the pair into scoring position, freshman Joe DiLeo (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann) grounded out and picked up an RBI as Monahan touched the plate to tie the game at two.
 
In the bottom of the third, the Golden Eagles brought three runs home, and added four more in the fourth to take a 9-2 lead. In the fourth, Hughes was chased from the game as senior Paul Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) came on and allowed the first three to reach before inning the inning on a double play.
 
Freshman Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) tripled with two outs in the top of the sixth inning, but Maritime was unable to bring the rookie second baseman home. St. Joseph's tacked on one more in the bottom of the sixth inning.
 
In the bottom of the seventh inning, junior Chris Mott (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester) came on the hill in relief of Pfundstein and yielded two more runt to give the Golden Eagles a 10-run lead and the victory as the 12th run came in off of a sacrifice fly.
 
Hughes took the loss after allowing five earned runs over his 3 1/3 innings on eight hits and four walks. Pfundstein allowed two earned runs in his 2 2/3 innings of work, while Mott tossed 2/3 of an inning and yielded two runs.
 
In game two, freshman Eric Kwiecinski (Commack, N.Y./St. Dominic) got the start and allowed one run in the first inning. Maritime threatened to tie the game in the top of the second inning as McLaughlin and Doerbecker reached base with one out, but the Privateer offense was unable to come up with the key hit to tie the game.
 
St. Joseph's took a 2-0 lead on a leadoff home run in the bottom of the second, which proved to be the only scoring for the next few innings. In the bottom of the fifth, the first two batters reached forcing Maritime to go to the bullpen with freshman Anthony D'Ancona (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) on the hill next. D'Ancona allowed the two inerited runners to score and also allowed one of his own as the Golden Eagles opened up a five-run adcantage.
 
Maritime began to chip away in the top of the sixth as Deddo led off with a walk, followed by a base knock off the bat of Longo. Senior Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) followed with a single to right, but Deddo was tagged out on the plate trying to score on the play. McLaughlin grounded out to bring home Longo for the first Martime run of the game.
 
Senior James Very (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) came on in the bottom of the sixth and retired the side in order, including one strikeout on his outing.
 
In Maritime's last chance at the plate, freshman Aaron Schiavoni (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) sruck out but reached first on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Schiavoni moved up to second on a wild pitch, Kirk and Monahan reached base on walks to load the bases with one out. The next pitcher came on for the Golden Eagles and got Deddo to ground out, allowing the second Privateer run to score, before getting Longo to fly out to end the game.
 
Taking the loss was Kwiecinski after allowing four earned runs over four innings of work. D'Ancona allowed one over his inning of work, while Very pitched a perfect sixth inning.
 
Maritime (4-9, 1-3 Skyline) will next play again on Saturday as the Privateers will make up their doubleheader with the Vaughn Warriors beginning at 11 a.m. on Reinhart Field, please not that this game was recently re-added to the schedule.
 
St. Joseph's (LI) (6-7, 2-0 Skyline) will also play a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday when the team plays host to the City College of NY Beavers at 11 a.m. as well.
