THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Seniors Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) and Joe Longo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) of the Maritime baseball team combined to drive in 18 runs as the pair went 12-for-16 at the plate to help propel the team to a pair of Skyline Conference wins over the Yeshiva Maccabees on Sunday afternoon by the scores of 15-1 and 13-0.
 
The pair also broke numerous modern-day career records on the day with Longo breaking the hits record with his first hit in the opener, he then added five more on the day to take a commanding lead with 133 hits in his four seasons. Longo also moved into the top spot for at bats, with 437 in his career, breaking the previous record of 436 held by former teammate Nick Galli '14. Longo's two doubles on the day also moved him into a first place tie with Joey Semler '13, as the pair now hold the top spot with 28 doubles each. Longo also moved into first in total bases with 181 bags to his credit in four seasons.
 
Meanwhile, Sollin smashed a pair of home runs on the day to take the modern-day program record in home runs with 11, passing the mark of 10 set by Matthew Cresswell '09. He also took the lead in career RBIs with 73 to this point in his career, one better than former teammate Ed Martinez '13. With his two games played today, and two games started on the afternoon, Sollin moved into sole possession in first place in those categories with 127 and 126 respectively. Sollin is also in second place just behind Longo with 178 total bases for his career.
 
Both Sollin and Longo's biggest hits on the day came in the second game as each of the seniors collected grand slam home runs to plate four runs apiece. Juniors Bruce Tyler (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) and Kevin Monahan (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur), as well as sophomore Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and freshman Joe DiLeo(Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann) all had three hits on the day, with Monahan driving in a pair of runs.
 
Also at the plate, senior Lenny Baldassare (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) connected on a three-run home run in the first game for the first round-tripper of his career.
 
On the hill, Maritime had a 0.64 ERA on the day as senior Pfundstein and freshman Brian Hughes (Maspeth, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) combined for seven innings in game one. That was followed up by rookie Anthony D'Ancona (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) and senior James Very (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) combining on a seven-inning shutout in game two.
 
Pfundstein got the start in game one and did not allow a hit through his first two innings of work. Yeshiva plated the first run of the game on a walk and two singles, but could not score anything further than just the one run.

The Maritime bats responded in the third as Longo led off with a double, and two batters later Sollin drove in his fellow senior with a knock down the right field line.
 
The Privateer bats exploded an inning later after Pfundstein set the side down in the bottom of the third, Maritime scored three times on three hits as Monahan drove in a pair with a double and later came in on a Longo single to make the game 4-1. The Privateers tacked on another run in the fifth inning to give the home team a four run lead.
 
Maritime continued to roll in the sixth inning as with Longo connecting on an RBI double to bring Monahan home after a leadoff single. McLaughlin singled to push Longo to third, followed by Sollin, who drove the ball over the right centerfield fence to make it 9-1. Four batters later, after senior Pat Kirk (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) and DiLeo reached on a run-scoring single, Baldassare was up next and smacked a three-run home run over the left centerfield fence to make it 13-1.
 
Sollin collected his fourth RBI of the inning on another base knock, followed by Tyler plating Longo on a base hit to make the score 15-1.
 
In the top of the seventh, with the mercy rule in effect, Hughes came back out for his second inning of work and struck out two more batters after striking out two in the sixth inning for a total of four to seal the win for Maritime.
 
In game two, the offense wasted no time after D'Ancona set the side down with ease in the first. Monahan singled up the middle and then stole second; he later came in to score on an errant throw by the Yeshiva defense. McLaughlin walked and freshman Aaron Schiavoni (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) drove him in after a double down the left field line to make it 2-0 after one inning of play.
 
Maritime tacked on another run as Longo launched a solo home run on a 3-1 pitch to right field to make the game 3-0. In the fourth the Privateers kept adding on as Tyler reached on a single, followed by freshman Connor Alwan (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) walking. Sophomore Dillin Bennett (Frankford, Md./Salisbury Christian) then bunted the pair into scoring position.
 
After falling behind 3-0 on the next batter, Yeshiva walked Monahan with intentional ball four to bring up Longo, who responded by dialing up the long ball once again for a grand slam. After a McLaughlin triple, Sollin plated him with a single to right centerfield to make it 8-0.
 
D'Ancona continued coasting with a big lead behind him, and struck out two batters in the top of the fifth inning, as he ended the game with eight strikeouts on the afternoon, one shy of his season-high.
 
In the bottom of the inning, Alwan led off with a single, followed by Bennett and sophomore Chris Stewart (Bethpage, N.Y./Chaminade) collecting knocks to load the bases. Longo collected yet another RBI with a sacrifice fly, followed by freshman Chris Bosch colleting a hit to re-load the bases. Sollin was up next and cracked a ball deep over the right field wall to give Maritime a 13-0 advantage.
 
After D'Ancona finished off the sixth, Very came on for the seventh and slammed the door shut with three quick outs to give Maritime its second win of the day.
 
Maritime (11-14, 6-6 Skyline) currently sitting in the fourth and final playoff spot will be in action next on Wednesday evening when the team takes on New York University for the second time this year, with the game being played at MCU Park in Brooklyn, N.Y.
 
Yeshiva (0-14, 0-12 Skyline) will be in action on Tuesday night when the Maccabees travel back to the Bronx to take on Lehman, in non-conference action.
