BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Maritime baseball team fell on the road to the NYU Violets on Wednesday evening at MCU Park in Brooklyn by the score of 9-1.

Maritime scored its lone run on a passed ball in the second inning, but was unable to get its offense going at any other point throughout the night as the Privateers were held to just three hits on the evening.

Freshman Tyler Stuart (Palm Coast, Fla./Matanzas) made the start on the hill for Maritime and was touched up for three runs on four hits while striking out one in the bottom of the first inning.

The Privateers responded in the top of the second as senior Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) walked to lead off the inning, but was erased as junior Kevin Monahan (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur) reached on a fielder's choice. Monahan then stole second and moved up to third as senior Albert Doerbecker (Point Lookout, N.Y./Long Beach) singled to put runners on the corners with one down.

The passed ball allowed both runners to move up one base, with Monahan crossing the plate on the play to make the score 3-1.

Freshman Brian Hughes (Maspeth, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) came on for the second inning and did not allow a run over his two innings of work. Up next out of the pen was junior Michael Oliva (Staten Island, N.Y./New Dorp), who allowed a few base runners but kept the Violets at bay in the fourth inning to keep the game at 3-1 in favor of NYU.

Oliva allowed the first two batters to reach in the fifth inning before being lifted in favor of senior Ryan Heizman (Commack, N.Y./Commack). The senior allowed four additional hits in the inning as NYU finished the frame with six runs on five hits, as the Violets opened up a 9-1 lead.

Doerbecker reached on a walk in the sixth, and freshman Connor Alwan (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) did the same in the seventh, but Maritime was unable to get the offense going to collect the big hits needed to drive in a run.

Junior Chris Mott (Port Chester, N.Y./Port Chester) shut down the Violets in the bottom of the sixth inning, while senior James Very (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) came on to keep NYU at bay in both the seventh and eight frames. Meanwhile at the plate, Maritime was not able to get another runner on base aside from a Doerbecker walk in the eighth inning.

Maritime (11-15, 6-6 Skyline) will gear up and prepare for the final weekend of the regular season as it hosts the Farmingdale Rams for a league doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.

New York University (16-19, 2-6 UAA) will play host to Centenary on Thursday, before hosting John Jay on Saturday at MCU Park in Brooklyn.
