TIFFIN, Ohio – Steven Marowski collected two hits Monday afternoon, but none was bigger than his ninth inning single which drove in Justin Dennis with the game-winning run as Albion College upset seventh-ranked Heidelberg University, 8-7.
Albion answered in the ninth after Doug Miller hit a two-run single and later scored on an error as Heidelberg forged a 7-7 tie with a three-run eighth.
Dennis drew a one-out walk in the ninth and he stole second with two out to set the table for Marowski. Marowski now has 23 runs batted in, second-most on the Albion squad this season.
Albion never trailed in the game. Jack Wyman hit his second homerun of the season – a three-run shot – in the first inning.
Heidelberg came back with two runs in its half of the first as Miller and Colin Verde produced RBI singles.
The starting pitchers – Albion's Steven Scott and Heidelberg's Jordan Watson – settled down and Albion maintained the 3-2 lead until scoring four times in the sixth. Ronnie Williams III hit a RBI single, Chase Carpenter sent two runs home with a double and Shane Lindemann added a RBI double.
Scott, who had the longest outing of his career at six innings, limited the damage after the first inning. Heidelberg stranded runners on third in the second and fourth innings and Lindemann gained the outfield assist when he threw a runner out at home.
"Steven's work after the first inning was huge and it allowed us to settle in," Albion Head Coach Scott Carden said. "He made big pitches in key situations. I was proud of the way we competed all day."
Heidelberg pounced immediately when it went back to the bat rack as Steven Morse hit a home run to lead off the sixth. TJ Harkness added a RBI double later in the inning to cut the Albion lead to 7-4.
Gunnar Owens (4-0) picked up a win on the mound for the second consecutive day. Patrick O'Brien pitched a perfect ninth inning to gain his first career save.
Albion, winners of four in a row, will take an 18-18 record into its final Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association series of the season. The Britons will host Alma at 2 p.m. Friday and travel to Alma for a Sunday doubleheader.
