PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Maritime baseball team went 1-and-1 on the day as the team split a Skyline Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon with the Purchase Panthers, the team fell in the opener by the score of 5-2 and followed that up with a 3-1 win in the night cap.

Sophomore Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) led the team with four hits on the afternoon and also collected an RBI and scored a run. Senior Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) and junior Kevin Monahan (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur)each collected three hits each, while seniors Joe Longo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and Albert Doerbecker(Point Lookout, N.Y./Long Beach) each had two hits on the day as well.

On the mound, senior Ryan Alsdorf (Bethel, N.Y./Sullivan West) got the starting nod and tossed a season-high seven innings, freshman Brian Hughes (Maspeth, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) capped off the opener with a scoreless inning in relief. The second game saw freshman Eric Kwiecinski (Commack, N.Y./St. Dominic) spin 5 2/3 innings, allowing just one earned run, rookie Anthony D'Ancona (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) followed up with 1 1/3 perfect innings of work to pick up the save in the night cap.

In the opener, Purchase jumped out to a 3-0 lead through the first three innings as the Panthers collected a pair of round-trippers, a solo jack in the first inning followed by a two-run home run in the third.

Sollin led off the fourth inning with a double, followed by Doerbecker collecting a knock to put runners on the corners with nobody out. A double play off the bat of freshman Aaron Schiavoni (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) proved costly, but did allow Sollin to score to make the game 3-1 heading to the fifth.

Purchase collected solo runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to add to its lead at 5-1 with the game going to the seventh.

Hughes came on in the eighth inning after Alsdorf allowed five runs on 11 hits, while striking out three over his second seven-inning outing of the year. Hughes loaded the bases with one out in the frame, but got out of it with a double play as he gave his offense a chance going to the top of the ninth.

In Maritime's last chance, Sollin connected on a one out double, followed once again by a Doerbecker single. Schiavoni grounded out for the second out of the inning, but Sollin was able to come across with Maritime's second run. However it was too little, too late as Purchase got the next batter to seal the 5-2 win.

In game two, Monahan led off the game with a single, and then stole second. McLaughlin singled to right field allowing Monahan to score the game's opening run. Kwiecinski allowed a pair of base runners in the bottom of the inning, but got out of the frame unscathed to send the game to the second.

The second inning saw Maritime score another run as senior Pat Kirk (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) lead off with a walk, and move up to second as freshman Connor Alwan (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) followed with a walk. Sophomore Nick Trivolis(East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) singled to left to load the bases and bring the top of the order to the plate. Monahan singled to right to chase Kirk home with Maritime's second run. However the Panthers got the next three batters to strand the bases loaded.

The two sides exchanged zeroes through the fourth inning, then in the top of the fifth Maritime scored once again. McLaughlin led off the inning with a single and stole second; Sollin followed with a walk but was erased on a fielder's choice by Doerbecker. Two batters later, Kirk drove McLaughlin home with a base hit to left field, putting the Privateers up, 3-0.

Kwiecinski continued to roll into the bottom of the sixth, as the first batter slammed a leadoff triple. The next Purchase batter flew out and picked up an RBI on the sacrifice fly. Two of the next three batters reached, forcing Maritime to the bullpen as D'Ancona came on and retired the first man he saw to strand a pair on base.

D'Ancona cruised through the bottom of the seventh as well to pick up the four-out save and package up the win for the Privateers.

In the game, Kwiecinski tossed 5 2/3 and allowed one run on seven hits, and a pair of hit batters while striking out one. D'Ancona faced four batters and retired them all for his first career save.
