Berry beats BSC at SAA Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Vikings remain undefeated in the Birmingham bracket as Berry College defeated the fourth-ranked Birmingham-Southern, 3-2, in a winner's bracket game on Saturday.

Ryan O'Connell tossed a complete-game, while Ben Jernigan stayed hot offensively for BC.

Berry (23-16-1) started the game on a high note with Grant Perkins knocking a single followed by a walk by Alex McGill. Ben Jernigan drove both runners with his bases-clearing double.

Birmingham-Southern (31-8-1) tied the game by plating a run in the first inning off an RBI single by Jacob Mayfield and a RBI groundout in the second inning.

BC was able to break the tie in the eighth inning with a RBI single by Alfred FrancisDusty Tyson started the inning with a single to second base and was later scored on Francis' hit.

O'Connell (4-3) pitched the entire game for Berry. He allowed seven hits with one earned run. O'Connell gave Berry a scare in the bottom of the ninth inning by hitting a batter and walking another. He responded, however, by then getting two batters to pop-out and one to ground out to end the game.

Of the nine batters for Berry, eight of them collected a hit.

The Vikings face BSC in the bracket championship game tomorrow at noon central time. Berry needs to win once and BSC will need to win twice to advance to next weekend's championship series.
