The Carthage College baseball team (24-9, 11-7 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin) won a Wednesday, April 29 non-conference game over Marian University (Wis., 20-17), 10-6, at Herr-Baker Field in Fond Du Lac, Wis.

After Marian scored two runs in the second and one in the third to take a 3-0 lead, Carthage scored in the fourth on an RBI-single by Reed Hero.   The Red Men closed to the gap to 3-2 in the sixth on an RBI-double by Nick Schmidlkofer, before the Sabres scored two in the bottom half to go up by three, 6-2.  Carthage cut the lead to 6-5 with a three-run eighth inning.  Zach Wade doubled in the first run of the inning, and Jared Knoespel followed with a two-run single.  The Red Men took their first lead of the game, 10-6, in the ninth.  Reed Hero singled in the tying run, Jared Helmich scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch, Zach Wade singled in a run, and Anthony Fortunato singled in two more for the 10-6 margin.

C.J. Casey (Fr., Hickory Hills, Ill./Palos Hills-Stagg, 2-0), the third Red Men hurler, picked up the win with two shutout innings.  Carthage starting pitcher Joe Nelson went the first five innings and allowed four runs, two earned, on seven hits and five walks.  Hunter Funkhouser (0-1), the fifth-of-six Sabres pitchers, took the loss.  Reed Hero (So., Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way North) led the Red Men's 17-hit attack by going four-for-five with two runs scored and two RBI.

On Friday, May 1, the Red Men open their final conference series of the year by traveling to Naperville, Ill., to take on North Central College (23-13, 14-4 CCIW) in a 3 p.m. game at Zimmerman Stadium/Alumni Field.  The two teams conclude the series with a Saturday, May 2 doubleheader at Augie Schmidt Field in Kenosha, Wis., beginning at Noon.  Carthage just needs one win this weekend over North Central to clinch a berth in the conference tournament.
