UW-La Crosse Earns Doubleheader Sweep at UW-Platteville

Platteville, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team, ranked 20th on this week's American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Top-25 Poll, earned a doubleheader sweep at UW-Platteville Wednesday afternoon at Kendall Murray Field.  The Eagles won the opener, 20-1 in seven innings, before earning a 18-2 victory in seven innings in the nightcap.  UW-L improves to 24-10 overall and wraps up its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) regular season with a 17-7 mark.  UW-Platteville drops to 21-15 overall and 12-8 in the conference.

UW-L totaled 38 runs on 39 hits in Wednesday's doubleheader as it extended its winning streak to six games.

In the opener, UW-L took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Justin Anderson singled with two outs and advanced to second on a Ben Morgan walk.  Shane Adler's single to left field scored Anderson for the first run of the game.

The Eagles tallied seven runs in the second inning on six hits.  Travis Buxton-Verstegen singled, Alex Brown walked and Eric Vatch had a bunt single to load the bases to start the inning.  Alex Cordova's triple scored all three runs for a 4-0 advantage.  Taylor Kohlwey followed with an RBI double to knock in Cordova.  After a UW-Platteville pitching change, Anderson singled to move Kohlwey to third. Morgan's sacrifice fly scored Kohlwey for a 6-0 lead and after Adler drew a walk, Bryce Barsness' two-run double scoring Anderson and Adler made it 8-0.

UW-L scored eight runs on six hits and two errors in the top of the fifth.  Barsness, Buxton-Verstegen and Vatch singled to load the bases with Cordova's sacrifice fly scoring Barsness for a 9-0 lead.  After Kohlwey was hit-by-pitch to load the bases, Anderson hit a grand slam to make it 13-0.  Morgan was then hit-by-pitch and scored after Adler rached on a Pioneers' error.  Barsness followed with an infield single to bring in Adler and Buxton-Verstegen finished the scoring with a single to knock in Barsness for a 16-0 advantage. 

Vatch added a two-run double scoring Adler and Nate Roethle in the seventh while Seth Feldman's two-run single brought in Alex Brown and Vatch for a 20-0 lead.

UW-Platteville got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh on Collin Deboer's fielder's choice scoring Zack Iverson.

Ben Cejka (6-1) earned the victory in the opener for UW-L, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing two hits while striking out two. 

The Eagles totaled 20 hits in the game, including seven players with at least two.  Anderson went 4-for-4 with three runs and four RBI while Barsness finished 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBI and Vatch 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBI.  Cordova went 2-for-4 with a run scored and four RBI while Buxton-Verstegen finished 2-for-3 with two runs.  Feldman and Roethle each went 2-for-2 with Feldman recording two RBI and Roethle with one run scored.

Colton Bomann (2-2) suffered the loss for UW-Platteville, going 1.0 inning, allowing six hits, six runs and two walks with one strikeout. Four different players had a hit for the Pioneers.

In the nightcap, UW-L scored three times in the top of the first.  Cordova singled to start the game and scored on Anderson's two-run home run for a 2-0 lead.  Morgan followed with a solo home run for a 3-0 lead.  The Eagles added three runs in the top of the second inning as Cordova singled with one and stole second.  He then came in on Kohlwey's double for a 4-0 lead and Anderson hit his second two-run home run of the game to make it 6-0.  Cordova's single in the top of third scored Buxton-Verstegen for a 7-0 advantage. 

The Pioneers cut the lead to 7-1 in the bottom of third on Deboer's single to score George Jester.  The Eagles made it 8-1 in the top of the fifth as Brown scored on Kohlwey's RBI single.

UW-L sent 15 batters to the plate in the top of the seventh scoring 10 runs on five hits and UW-Platteville error.  Cordova had a pair of RBI in the innings on a double and single.  Adler, Barsness, Feldman, Brown and Roethle each had an RBI.

UW-Platteville's Kyle Reinhart hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to finish the scoring.

Joe Miller (6-1) earned the victory for UW-L, going 5.0 innings, allowing five hits and one run with three strikeouts.

The Eagles finished with 19 hits in the second game as every starter had at least one.  Cordova finished 5-for-5 with four runs and three RBI while Brown went 3-for-3 with three runs and an RBI.  Anderson finished 2-for-4 with three runs, two home runs and four RBI while Kohlwey, Barsness and Feldman each had two hits.  Kohlwey finished with three RBI with Morgan and Buxton-Verstegen each scored twice.

Trevor Hall (2-1) took the loss for UW-Platteville, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing 12 hits and seven runs while striking out two.  Reinhart finished 2-for-3 with a home run for the Pioneers.

UW-L returns to action Saturday, May 2 hosting Hamline University (Minn.) in a doubleheader at 4 p.m. at Copeland Park.  Both games are scheduled for seven innings.
