Union, N.J. (5/7/15) – The Cougars' six, seven and eight batters combined for seven hits and for five runs scored to help Kean University push past Widener in the last regular season contest of the season on Thursday evening by the final of 7-3.
Senior Tom McGuckin was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a triple while junior Ryan Reitmeyer was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
With the win Kean finishes enters the NCAA tournament with a 34-10 overall record, their 11th straight season with 30 or more wins.
In today's action, Widener (23-19) was the first to break up the shutout with a single run in the second as a two out single by Bob Barnett through the left side scored Nicholas Enos who reached on a double, the only extra base hit of the day for the Pride.
Kean took the lead for good with three runs to start the second. Back-to-back doubles from Anthony Fischetti and Reitmeyer had both runners in scoring position. McGuckin found open space down the line and brought them both home with a triple for a quick 2-1 lead. Tyler Heisch lofted a sac fly to push the lead out to 3-1.
The Cougars extended the lead with four runs in the third. Four hits to start the frame, a double from Sal Taormina, and singles from Matt Krupa, Fischetti and Reitmeyer gave Kean a 6-1 lead. An RBI groundball from Heisch rounded out the scoring in the inning.
The Pride got two back in the sixth with an RBI single from Barnett and an RBI groundout from Greg McDonough for the final of 7-3.
Senior Dan Hansen (1-1) earned the win for Kean. He allowed three runs in five and a third innings. Southpaw Emilio Calderon bridged the gap with two and two thirds innings of scoreless ball before junior Vinny Zanfordino closed things out in the ninth.
