Bullpen falters as Thiel falls to Waynesburg

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – The Thiel College baseball team suffered a 7-4 defeat to the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets in the opening game of the 2015 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament Thursday afternoon.

 

 

Thiel got out to an early 4-0 advantage after scoring a pair of runs in the first and two more runs in the third. However, the Yellow Jackets responded with seven unanswered runs, including a three-run seventh inning, which put them ahead for good.

 

 

Thiel plated two runs in the top of the first when Trent Mosley brought home Josh Doody on an RBI fielder's choice. Ryan Brumbaugh followed with an RBI-single up the middle that scored Mosley.

 

 

Trent Smith was responsible for Thiel's other two runs when he hit a two-run home run over the left field fence.

 

 

Waynesburg took the lead in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI walk by Ben Miller with the bases loaded that scored Jonathan Kletzli. Eric Crum followed with a two-RBI single that gave Waynesburg the lead, 7-4.

 

 

Thiel starter Matt Elko, who did not earn a decision, struck out four and allowed three earned runs in six innings.

 

 

The Tomcats will play the Thomas More Saints in an elimination game Friday at 1 p.m. Should the Tomcats defeat the Saints Friday, they would play the loser of the winner's bracket game between Waynesburg and Washington & Jefferson Friday at 4 p.m.
