UW-La Crosse Falls to UW-Stevens Point in WIAC Championship Tournament

Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team fell 2-0 to UW-Stevens Point Friday afternoon in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship Tournament at UW-Whitewater's Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.  The Eagles, ranked 17th on D3baseball.com and 18th on the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Polll, drops to 28-11 on the season. The Pointers, ranked 13th on D3baseball.com and 14th on the ABCA, improve to 29-11.

UW-L, the championship's second-seed, will face fourth-seeded UW-Oshkosh at 4 p.m. Friday in an elimination game. The Titans fell 5-2 to top-seeded UW-Whitewater in Friday's opening game. The Warhawks are ranked third on both the D3baseball.com and ABCA Polls.

UW-L had its 10-game winning streak snapped with the loss as the Eagles were shutout for the first time since a 2-0 loss to Ramapo College (N.J.) March 20.

UW-Stevens Point, the championship's third-seed, took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning Friday.  Taylor Carlson singled to start the frame and moved to second on a passed ball.  Mitch Beau was then hit-by-pitch. Ray Greco flied out and AlexTarras popped out for the first two outs of the inning, but Riley Spetz drew a walk to load the bases.  Bobby Gregorich was then hit-by-pitch to score Carlson for the first run of the game.

UW-L stranded a pair of runners in the bottom of the sixth.  Joel Zyhowski walked to lead-off the inning and advanced to second on Eric Vatch's sacrifice bunt.  Alex Cordova popped out for the second out of the inning before Taylor Kohlwey drew a walk.  Justin Anderson flied out to deep centerfield to end the inning.

The Pointers extended their lead to 2-0 in the top of the eighth. Carlson singled to start the inning and moved to second on Beau's sacrifice bunt.  Carlson advanced to third on Greco's groundout and scored on pinch-hitter Pete Strommen's RBI single to center field.

Ben Cejka (6-2) suffered the loss for UW-L, pitching 7.2 innings, allowing seven hits, two runs and three walks while striking out four.  Jake Stern went 1.1 innings, allowing two hits.

Bryce Barsness, Shane Adler and Vatch each had one hit for the Eagles.

Beau (7-2) earned the victory for UW-Stevens Point, pitching a complete-game.  He went 9.0 innings, allowing three hits and five walks with two strikeouts.

Carlson finished 2-for-4 and scored both runs for the Pointers.
