UW-La Crosse Eliminated from WIAC Championship Tournament

Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team fell 11-4 to UW-Oshkosh Friday night in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship Tournament at UW-Whitewater's Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium. The Eagles, ranked 17th on D3baseball.com and 18th on the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Poll, drops to 28-12 on the season.  With the loss, UW-L is eliminated from the league tournament after a 2-0 loss to UW-Stevens Point earlier Friday.  The Pointers are ranked 13th on D3baseball.com and 14th in the ABCA.  UW-L entered the tournament as the second-seed.

UW-Oshkosh, the championship's second-seed, advances to play either top-seeded UW-Whitewater or third-seeded UW-Stevens Point Saturday, May 9 at 1 p.m.

UW-Oshkosh took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning Friday as Jack Paulson scored on a passed ball.  The Titans took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth with Robbie Kleman scoring on an Eagles' failed pickoff attempt.  UW-Oshkosh added six runs, including four unearned, in the eighth inning as UW-L committed three errors.  Andy Brahier's sacrifice fly scored John Eagan to give the Titans a 3-0 lead while Logan Reckert's single knocked in Gajewski for a 4-0 advantage.

Paulson added a two-run single scoring Tyler Kozlowski and Reckert to make it 6-0 before Eagan drew a bases-loaded walk to score Cooper Lang.  Gajewski's RBI single knocked in Paulson with the final run of the inning.

UW-L got on the board in the bottom of the eighth with a pair of two-run home runs. Taylor Kohlwey singled to start the inning and scored on Ben Morgan's one-out two-run home run to cut the lead to 8-2.  Shane Adler was hit-by-pitch and Bryce Barsness followed with a two-run home run to make it 8-4.  The Eagles' Travis Buxton-Verstegen singled and Joel Zyhowski walked later in the inning, but Alex Cordova struck out to end the inning.

Lang hit a three-run home run for the Titans in the top of the ninth to finish the scoring.

Joe Miller (7-2) took the loss for UW-L, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing six hits, two runs (none earned) and one walk while striking out six.  The Eagles finished with five errors in the game as the Titans scored six unearned runs.

Kohlwey went 4-for-5 at the plate for the Eagles with one run scored while Barsness finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.  UW-L finished with 11 hits overall.

Peter Jewell (5-4) picked up the win for UW-Oshkosh, going 7.1 innings, allowing eight hits and three runs with three strikeouts.

Paulson went 4-for-4 for the Titans with two runs and two RBI while Gajewski, Reckert, Kleman and Lang each had two hits.  UW-Oshkosh totaled 14 hits in the contest.

UW-L will await word if it has received an at-large bid to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Championships.  The teams will be announced Sunday, May 10. The Eagles were second in this week's NCAA Division III Midwest Rankings.
