Yeomen Keep Season Alive with a Win Over Oswego

More news about: Oberlin

Auburn, New York – The magical ride for the Oberlin College baseball team continues on as the eighth-seeded Yeomen handed the fourth-seeded Oswego State Lakers a, 7-2, loss on Thursday morning at Falcon Park.

With the win, the Yeomen moved their overall record to 19-27 and are now 5-0 in elimination games this season. The Lakers season will come to an end with a mark of 27-13. The victory is also Oberlin's first-ever NCAA Tournament win, being in their first-ever postseason regional.

Freshman right-hander Sean Kiley was sensational in the complete-game victory, marking the fifth time this season he has gone the distance. The studio City, California, native surrendered the two Oswego runs on eight hits, two walks and two hit batters. He struck out two with 75 of his 125 pitches going for strikes.

The Lakers pushed across a run in the first, but Kiley was able to limit the damage as the Oswego left the bases loaded.

Oberlin answered right back in the home half of the inning, jumping on Oswego starter Robert Donnelly for three runs on three hits and two errors. Benjamin Whitener continued his torrid pace, driving in two runs on a single to center while increasing his single-season school record RBI total to 48. Following the second error of the inning, Ryan Bliss came through with a run-producing single to cap the frame's scoring.

Bliss would register his second RBI of the game in the third with his opposite-field double to left field to score Danny Baldocchi. Blaise Dolcemaschio, who provided the go-ahead RBI yesterday against Cortland, delivered again with a two-out single to put the Yeomen on top 5-1.

In innings four through seven neither team generated much offense as Kiley continued to deal and Donnelly settled in nicely.

In the eighth the Lakers turned to Miles Kiley on the mound and the Yeomen welcomed him by belting out four hits en route to adding two more runs. Back-to-back singles by Mitch Novak and Dolcemaschio to start the inning set the table for Jeff Schweighoffer. The Yeomen senior, who had three hits in the game – including career hit 200 in his previous at-bat, came through once again with an RBI single to left. Kyle Decker then followed with a bloop-single to shallow right field to plate the final Yeomen run of the game.

Oswego ended the game how the started – scoring a single run in the ninth – but it was certainly all for naught as the final outcome was never in jeopardy.

The Yeomen will take on the loser of tonight's #6 RPI and #7 Old Westbury game tomorrow at 1:15 p.m.
