Ramapo heads to D-III World Series for second time in school history

The Ramapo College baseball team is headed to the NCAA Division III College World Series after a walk-off 6-5 victory over #5 Massachusetts Institute of Technology at the 2015 NCAA New England Regional.
 
In the bottom of the 13th inning and the scored tied at five, Rob DeAngelis led off with a double to left center before Scott Shields moved him to third on a sac bunt with no outs. MIT elected to walk Joe Venturino and Chris Werr to load the bases. Scott Peschiani sent a 3-1 pitch in the air down the left field line for a sac fly as DeAngelis raced home before the throw scoring the game-winning run.
 
With the win the Roadrunners advance to the College World Series for the second time in school history and first time in 31-years. The 1984 Ramapo team won the only NCAA Championship in program history.
 
In the top of the second inning, MIT took a 1-0 lead when Kendall Helbert hit a line drive home run that banked off the top of the fence in left field for his first home run of the year.
 
Chris Werr drove home Joe Venturino with a double down the left field line to tie the game at one in the bottom of the third inning. Venturino lace single up the middle on a 0-2 pitch to reach base, scoring from first on Werr's hit. Werr then moved up on a while pitch before he scored on an infield single by Scott Peschiani to take a 2-1 lead.
 
Back-to-back doubles by MIT in the top of the fifth plated the tying run before a throwing error by the Roadrunners allowed the go ahead run to score as the Engineers took a 3-2 lead. John Drago doubled before Parker Tew laced a double to drive him home. Tew later scored on the Ramapo error while Hayden Cornwell ended up on second base. Kyle Doerr entered the game in relief for the Ramapo and closed the door on the MIT threat with two straight strikeouts.
 
In the bottom of the seventh the Roadrunners tied the game at three. Brandon Berger drilled a double over the center fielder's head to lead off before he moved to third on a wild pitch. Rob DeAngelis then laced a single into center field plating the game-tying run 3-3. Following a pitching change and one out recorded for MIT, Venturino drilled a double to the left field fence driving home DeAngelis who scored all the way from first base for the 4-3 lead.
 
With two outs in the top of the eighth MIT put runners on first and second with a bunt single and hit batter before Ramapo made a pitching change in Walker Larson. Austin Filiere laced a single into center field plating one run for MIT to tie the game 4-4 before Ramapo got the final out of the inning.
 
In the bottom of the eighth, Ramapo scored the go ahead run with the bases loaded. Shields slapped a ball to the second baseman for MIT who was playing just beyond the infield dirt on the grass. The ball was misplayed allowing Walsh to touch home plate to take a 5-4 lead.  MIT came back to tie the game at five in the top of the ninth with a leadoff solo home run from Cornwell 5-5 before the Roadrunners got out of the inning to head to the bottom of the ninth. Both teams had chances to score in each extra inning frame before Ramapo scored in the bottom of the 13th.
 
Walker Larson (10-2) earned the win in relief for the Roadrunners. He fired 5.1 innings of work with six strikeouts, one walk and four hits. Larson started Ramapo's first game of the tournament and pitched the first ten innings in the no-decision as the Roadrunners walked off with the 4-3 in 11 innings.
 
Mike Campbell started the game for Ramapo he struck out three and scattered six hits while giving up three runs (two earned). Doerr came in for relief and worked the next 3.1 innings, striking out five and surrendering three hits.
 
Venturino finished the game 3-6 with one RBI and one run scored while DeAngelis, Shields and Walsh each collected two hits apiece. Peschiani drove home two RBI while Venturino, DeAngelis and Werr each plated one RBI. Ryan Rinsky, Venturino and Walsh were all named to the NCAA New England Regional All-Tournament Team while Walsh was named Tournament MVP.
