Union, N.J. (2/20/16) – The Kean University baseball team's offense came alive in a 12-2 non-conference win over Gwynedd Mercy University on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Ryan Reitmeyer led the charge with three RBI and a double as the #5/6 Cougars evened their early record to 1-1.
The Griffins (0-1) took an early lead with a two spot in their first at-bat. In a sloppy first inning with a walk, wild pitch and throwing error, GMU used two timely singles, the later by Dave Tatoian to take a quick 2-0 lead.
That lead was short lived as Kean tied things up in their half of the second. Seniors Andy Lopez and Reitmeyer got aboard with one out singles and graduate student Matt Meleo put them both into scoring position with a sacrifice. Junior Tyler Heisch then lined a single through the right side scoring both.
Kean put the game away in the third with six runs on six hits, all with two outs. Senior Eric Fernandez started things off with a single and the hit parade ensued for the offensive surge. Lopez, Reitmeyer (two RBI double), Meleo and senior Chris Amato all picked up RBI in the inning.
That was good enough for rookie Tyler Hopman who settled down nicely after the first to collect his first collegiate win. He tossed six innings allowing two runs and four hits with three strikeouts and just one walk. Newcomers Frank Dente IV and Ajay Kawa combined for just one hit the rest of the way with four strikeouts.
Mike Di Ianni suffered the loss for the Griffins. Di Ianni allowed eight runs and eight hits in two and two thirds innings of work.
Matt Krupa, Lopez, Reitmeyer and Meleo all finished with a multi-hit day in the win.
Kean returns to action on Sunday when they host the College at Brockport at roughly 1:30 p.m. The Golden Eagles are facing Stevens at Jim Hynes Stadium at 10 a.m.
