NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (February 21, 2016) - The Rutgers University-Newark baseball team picked up its first win of the young 2016 season Sunday, downing the City College of New York, 8-5, at Captains Park in Virginia.
With the win, the Scarlet Raiders improve to 1-2 on the season, while the Beavers fall to 0-3. Rutgers-Newark returns to action Tuesday, March 1, when it hosts Penn State University-Abington at Diamond Nation in Flemington, N.J.
The Scarlet Raider offense was led by a sophomore catcher Justin Marks, sophomore third basemanBrian Boulineau, junior left fielder Josh Cote and senior shortstop Gerry Patrizio who all had multiple hits.
Freshman hurler Anthony Rosoline made the most of his first collegiate start, tossing seven strong innings and striking out three. The rookie allowed two earned runs, scattering five hits and walking none to pick up the win (1-0).
Rosoline gave up a homer to the second batter he faced but settled down nicely, allowing his team to go in front for good in the top half of the second inning. Freshman catcher Ross Halkias singled up the middle to set the table, and after an error put runners on second and third, two groundouts gave the Scarlet Raiders a 2-1 edge.
Rutgers-Newark tacked on a run in the third, getting a single and stolen base from senior center fielder Billy Taylor who came around to score on a run-scoring single from Marks, and after the Beavers pushed across a run in the bottom of the third, R-N got it right back in the top of the fourth when Patrizio singled in Boulineau who led the inning off with a double to left field.
Rosoline cruised through the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings, allowing just two singles, and Newark scored an insurance marker in the sixth when Boulineau scored on a passed ball after doubling down the left-field line to start inning.
Three more runs for the Scarlet Raiders in the top of the ninth gave the Rutgers-Newark bullpen some insurance. Marks tripled with one out, and after a walk to Cote, Marks scored on a passed ball. Sophomore right fielder Danny Iannaccone was next, delivering an RBI single, and Boulineau came through with his third double of the game to put runners at second and third with one out. Taylor plated the final run with a groundout, giving R-N an 8-2 lead.
The Beavers were able to tighten the game late with a sacrifice fly and two-run homer, but newcomer Vincent Enea came on and struck out the only batter he faced to earn his first save as a Scarlet Raider.
Boulineau finished 3-for-4 with three doubles, two runs scored and walk, and Marks was 3-for-4 with an RBI, two runs scored and a walk. Cote was 2-for-3 with one run, one walk and one RBI, and Patrizio was 2-for-5 with a walk and run batted in.
The Scarlet Raiders tallied 13 hits on the day, drawing six walks and compiling six total runs batted in. CCNY finished with eight hits.
