RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College baseball team swept a doubleheader on Sunday, defeating Kalamazoo 13-4 in game one and 6-2 in game two to take the three-game series held at Sadler Stadium this weekend.
In game one, Earlham got on the board quickly using a hit from senior Thomas Rea and a Kalamazoo error to plate one run in the top of the first.
After retiring the Hornets in order in the top of the second, the Quakers broke the game open in the bottom of the second. Junior Matt Barger led off the frame with a double and junior Eric Elkus and senior Ethan Bailey also reached base via a walk and a singles, respectively. Freshman Addison Robertson delivered his first collegiate hit, a bases clearly triple down the right field line, giving Earlham a 4-0 lead.
Junior Nate Lynch and Rea both drew walks, loading the bases once again. Senior Brandon Smalling then cleared the bases with a grand slam to left field. In total, the Quakers tallied seven runs on four hits and drew three walks in the inning.
Neither team would score until the sixth inning when the Hornets used two hits and an Earlham to plate two runs. The Quakers had the answer, however, scoring five runs on four hits to put the game out of reach.
Kalamazoo added two runs in the top of the ninth.
Senior Bryce Rainey picked up the victory allowing five hits and striking out two in seven innings of work. Junior Zach Kimura and sophomore Dorian Holmes each pitched one inning in relief.
Aaron Schwark took the loss for Kalamazoo, allowing seven earned runs in 1.1 innings pitched.
Smalling finished 2-4 with four RBIs while Rea went 3-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
Mitchell VanKoevering led Kalamazoo offensively going 2-4 with two RBIs.
In game two, Earlham used home runs from Smalling and Elkus to take a 3-0 lead after two innings. The Quakers scored a single run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings for a total of six runs.
Kalamazoo scored its two runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Junior John Cornett earned his first victory of the season allowing seven hits and two earned runs in six innings of work. Freshman Walter Talcott earned the three-inning save, striking out four and allowing one hit.
Krumlauf led the way going 3-3 with two RBIs and a walk. Lynch, Rea, and Elkus each added two hits.
The Quakers stand at 5-1 on the season and return to action for a three-game series against Wilmington at Sadler Stadium.
