Auburndale, FL --- Senior Anthony Capuano (Stoneham, MA) was 2-for-2 with walk and an RBI as WPI fell twice to St. Joseph's (ME) Sunday in the season-opening doubleheader for both teams. The Engineers were doubled up in game one, 6-3, before being blanked 7-0 in game two.
The Monks put up three runs in the second on a 2-RBI double down the right field line and later on an infield miscue. St. Joseph's added another in the third courtesy of a solo homer down the line.
Senior Alex Venditti (Newton, MA) plated the first Engineer run of the season when he was chased home on a Capuano single up the middle in the fourth. WPI tacked on two more in the fifth on an RBI triple by senior Vinny D'Ambrosio (Mahopac, NY), who eventually came home on a Monk miscue to make it a one-run game.
St. Joseph's pulled away with two more in the fifth courtesy of a run-producing single and a wild pitch.
Junior Mike Vaitkunas (Auburn, MA) allowed six runs – one earned – on six hits while striking out three and walking one in five innings of work. Freshman Tom McCarthy (Jefferson, MD) fanned one in an inning of action.
Junior Nick Malatesta (Wrentham, MA) also yielded a pair of earned runs – three in all – on three hits. He also struck out eight and walked three Boynton Hillers over five innings. Senior Corey McNamara (West Newbury, MA) earned the save in a 1-2-3 seventh.
Venditti, senior John Mulready (Rockland, MA), senior John Caliri (Hanson, MA) and junior Nick Comei (Haverhill, MA) each registered a hit in the second game while Venditti also drew a walk.
Both pitching staffs combined for eight Ks with starters junior CJ Doskocil (Sterling, MA) and sophomore Josh Partridge (Deerfield, NH) tallying five apiece. JuniorMike Duclos (Greenfield, MA), freshman Adam Bettigole (South Windsor, CT) and classmate Robert Chase (Grand Isle, VT) all saw time on the hill for the Crimson and Gray.
WPI returns to action tomorrow for a 9am set with Waynesburg (PA) in Winter Haven while the Monks face Ursinus for a pair beginning at 10am.
