Marlins Spring 5-1 Upset on No. 18 Mary Washington

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College baseball team scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and turned three double plays to defeat No. 18 Mary Washington 5-1 in non-conference action Monday.

First-year Luke Chiasson (1-0) got the start on the mound for the Marlins and faced just two batters over the minimum through the first four innings.

The Marlins got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth when Taylor Erby walked, moving to second and third on a groundout and flyout respectively. A wild pitch allowed him to race home for the initial lead.

Mary Washington tied the contest in the top of the fifth as Kyle Bynum's RBI single to shortstop scored Nykolai Ellis. Virginia Wesleyan enduced a 5-4-3 double play to get out of the jam. It was the second double play of the game for VWC as the Eagles put two runners on base in the third with one out before another 5-4-3 double play ended the scoring chance.

The Marlins scored four runs, all with two outs, in the fifth behind the strength of six singles. Corey King started the frame with a hit by pitch and a steal. Mary Washington struck out a Marlin beforeDeon Hammond singled King to third.

Nik Milvo contributed an RBI infield single to score King for the 2-1 lead. Following a Randy Neiszsingle, C.J. LindsayBrandon Kussmaul, and Matt Murray all singled home runs for the 5-1 final margin.

Bynum led No. 18 Mary Washington (13-2) with two hits while Joe Thompson threw three hitless innings out of the bullpen.

Neisz and Murray each had a pair of hits for the Marlins. Chaisson allowed just one unearned run in six innings on the mound.

Virginia Wesleyan (6-4) host Methodist University Wednesday for a 2:30 p.m. non-conference start.
