Thomas More Falls to Bridgewater (Va.) in Season Opener

(AUBURNDALE, Fla.) - The Thomas More College baseball team dropped a heartbreaker today (Monday, March 7, 2016) 14-12 in 10 innings to Bridgewater (Va.) College on the first day of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at the Lake Myrtle Complex in Auburndale, Florida.

Both teams came into the contest receiving votes in the latest D3baseball.com poll. Bridgewater improved to 8-4, while it was the first game of the year for the Saints and they are now 0-1.

Thomas More was led at the plate by senior Donovan Pogue (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier), who was two-for-five with a home run and three runs batted-in, freshman Sam Hauer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder), who was two-for-four with two runs scored and a double and junior Casey Metzger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills), who was five-for-six with two runs scored and two RBI.  Sophomore Ben Laumann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) finished the day with three RBI.

Senior Brandon Humphrey (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) started on the mound and had a no-decision as he went five innings giving up three runs on nine hits, striking out six and walking two.  Sophomore Jayson Essell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) suffered the loss, while junior pitcher Ken Ruberg (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) had a blown save.

The Saints return to the diamond tomorrow when they take on Central (Iowa) College at 12 p.m. in Winter Haven, Florida.
