NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Senior Mitchell Keeler (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) delivered an RBI double in the top of the 13th and sophomore Christian Cok (Chester, S.C./Lewisville) pitched five scoreless innings in relief as the ninth-ranked Randolph-Macon baseball team edged No. 17 Christopher Newport 6-5 Tuesday afternoon at Captains Park.

Sophomore Rick Spiers (South Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) had a leadoff double off the centerfield wall on an 0-2 pitch to start the 13th for the Yellow Jackets (12-1). After Spiers stole third, Keeler doubled into the left field corner to plate Spiers with the go-ahead run.

The Captains (10-2) tried to rally in the bottom of the frame. A leadoff single and a muffed throw on a sacrifice attempt put two on with no outs. Cok (3-0) promptly picked the runner off second for the first out. The next hitter singled to center. Senior Christian Sanderson (Lynchburg, Va./Jefferson Forest) nailed the runner trying to go from first to third for the second out. The runner on first stole second, but Cok fanned the final batter to secure the win for the Yellow Jackets.

Cok retired the first 10 batters he faced. He allowed three hits and one intentional walk in five innings with six strikeouts.

After CNU scored a pair in the bottom of the first, R-MC answered in the third as senior Travis Lodge (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) belted a two-run homer to knot the score at 2-2.

The Yellow Jackets took the lead an inning later. Sanderson was hit by a pitch to start the frame, moved to second on a passed ball, took third on a bunt single by freshman Jeffrey Butler (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) and scored on an error as the visitors took a 3-2 lead.

The Captains used back-to-back homers in seventh to take a 5-3 lead. R-MC cut into the deficit in the eighth. Sanderson had a one-out single, advanced to second and scored on a base hit by Butler to make it a 5-4 contest.

The Yellow Jackets tied it in the ninth as senior Michael Kroll (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry) walked with the bases loaded and two away to force extra innings.

Lodge finished with two hits and two RBI, while Spiers and Sanderson both had two hits and two runs for the victors.

Randolph-Macon will host Bridgewater in a noon ODAC doubleheader on Saturday, March 12, on Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park.
