Covenant drops series finale to N.C. Wesleyan

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant baseball team could not hold a three-run lead as visiting North Carolina Wesleyan rallied for a 7-4 victory over the Scots in the series finale on Saturday afternoon.

The loss drops Covenant to 10-10 overall and 3-6 in USA South play. N.C. Wesleyan, which took the series win, goes to 15-6 and 7-2.

Covenant carved out a 4-1 lead after four innings of play as the Scots scored three times in the third and once more in the fourth. Down 1-0 in the third, Devin Cerrato singled home Joel Johnson with one out before a Caleb Bloye RBI ground out and an Alex Kerr RBI single gave the Scots a 3-1 lead.

In the fourth, Z Arima led off with a single and later scored when Stephen Kegley singled to right field followed by a throwing error by the N.C. Wesleyan right fielder.

N.C. Wesleyan would tie the score at 4-4 with three runs in the sixth. Tony Sanchez led off with a solo home run and Ciro Norzagaray drove in two with a two-out single. The score remained tied until the ninth when the Bishops plated three runs.

Covenant starting pitcher Drew Bradley, making his second start of the year, went 5.1 innings allowing one earned run on four hits with three strikeouts. Ryan Gosney (2-2) gets the loss after going the final 3.1 innings.

Trenton Nobles and Perry Rigby had two hits apiece to lead Covenant. 

N.C. Wesleyan reliever Andrew Franklin (1-0) picks up the win as he tossed 2.2 scoreless innings. Starter Richard Harrell lasted just 3.1 innings and surrendered three earned runs on seven hits. Sanchez finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs, while Justin DiSanto had two hits in five at-bats.
