WINTER HAVEN, Fla.-- The Trine baseball team walked off with a 6-5 victory over Muskingum as the Thunder earned its first victory of the season Monday in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
Robert Ross' (Valparaiso, Ind./Washington Township) pinch-hit RBI-single in the bottom of the ninth lifted Trine to its first win of the 2016 campaign. Kory Shackle (Butler, Ohio/Mount Vernon) had a big game at the plate for the Thunder with four hits, including two doubles and a triple. Shackle now has more career triples than any player on record in team history. The Fighting Muskies worked their way back from a 5-0 deficit to tie the score in the late innings. Trine improved to 1-2 on the year. Muskingum fell to 1-2.
The Thunder broke out the bats earlier to put up three runs in the first. Trine put two runners on with one out, before back-to-back RBI-singles by J.J. LaBounty (Avon, Ind./Covenant Christian) and Ethan Kirkman (Oregon, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit) made the score 2-0. Shackle's RBI-double capped the scoring in the inning.
Trine tacked on two more runs in the fifth when Shackle's sixth-career triple brought a run home. Zach Seder (Saginaw, Mich./Valley Lutheran) followed with an RBI-single to put the Thunder up 5-0.
Brandon Mylcraine (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) fired 6.2 innings of strong work for Trine, holding Muskingum scoreless through six. Overall, the senior surrendered three earned runs on six hits, walked one and fanned three. He received a no-decision.
The Fighting Muskies pushed across three runs in the seventh and added two more to tie the score in the eighth. A two-run single off the bat of Matt Lynn tied the score with two outs in the eighth.
Jacob Stauffer (Elkhart, Ind./Concord) shut down Muskingum in the ninth to set up the walk-off victory. The sophomore worked a perfect inning to earn his first collegiate win.
A pair of walks, a sac bunt and an infield single by Shackle loaded the bases with one out and set the stage for Ross' walk-off hit. The junior's single through the left side brought home Drew Palmer (Hartford, Wis./Hartford Union) with the winning run.
Trine returns to action tomorrow at 9 a.m. with a single, nine-inning game against Wittenberg.
