Oxy Edges Rutgers-Newark, Streak at 11 Wins

More news about: Occidental

LOS ANGELES -- Jack Brancheau came through with another big hit, the left side of Oxy's infield was nearly perfect at the plate and the Occidental baseball team won its 11th game in a row, edging Rutgers-Newark 4-3 in the first game of a three-game non-conference series at Anderson Field this weekend.

Season Impact: Oxy improves to 13-4 on the year. The Tigers are currently 10-2 and in first place in the SCIAC.

Rutgers-Newark falls to 5-6.

Brancheau singled through the left side of the Scarlet Raiders' infield, bringing in Charlie Caccamofor the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Brancheau, a first year from Scottsdale, Ariz., has been clutch in big moments so far in his young career. He went 4 for 5 and got the big hit during a ninth-inning rally to beat Whittier last weekend and hit a walk off home run in the 11th to beat Claremont-Mudd-Scripps earlier this year.

Reid Gibbs scored the tying run earlier in the inning on a wild pitch.

Gibbs, who played shortstop, went 2 for 3 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI and Caccamo, who played third, went 2 for 2 with a run scored and an RBI.

Riley James had an outstanding outing as Oxy's starter, striking out eight, with just two earned runs in eight innings pitched.

Josh Cohen came on in the ninth to pick up the save.

Ryan Macfari was 2 for 4 with a pair of runs scored and Justin Marks was 1 for 4 with two RBIs for Rutgers-Newark.

Rutgers-Newark scored first when James gave up a two-RBI double to Justin Marks in the top of the third.

In the fourth inning, Oxy's Graham Pimm doubled down the left field line, scoring Eamon McNeil.

Oxy scored again in the bottom of the fifth, scoring one after loading the bases on three consecutive infield singles by James, Brady Fuller and Caccamo.

Next Game: The Tigers and Scarlet Raiders play the second of their three-game series on Saturday afternoon.
