No. 2 Baseball beats Sewanee twice on the road

SEWANEE, Tenn.—The No. 2 Birmingham-Southern baseball team picked up two wins on the road Saturday, defeating Sewanee by the scores of 10-3 and 7-1.

The Panthers moved to 18-3 overall and 7-1 in the Southern Athletic Association; the Tigers fell to 2-22 overall and 1-7 in the SAA.

GAME 1

  • BSC led 5-0 after the first four innings, but Sewanee cut the lead back to 5-3 with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
  • The Panthers responded with three in the top of the sixth to pull up 8-3, and two more in the top of the ninth.
  • Junior Ryan Gaines (6-0) threw the first seven innings and gave up four hits and three earned runs, striking out nine Tiger batters.
  • Freshman John Michael Shirley came in for the final two innings, returning to action after a hand injury, and gave up one hit.
  • BSC recorded 18 hits, led by junior Sam Roberts who was 4-of-5 with four RBI.
  • Senior Matt Brown was 3-of-6, and four different Panthers had two hits each.

GAME 2

  • Each team scored a single run to start the game, playing to a 1-1 tie after two full innings.
  • The Panthers scored four in the top of the third, thanks in part to two RBI from senior Taylor McCracken.
  • BSC scored twice in the top of the fourth to round out scoring in the seven-inning game.
  • Junior Stephen Himic (4-1) started and went six innings, allowing four hits and one earned run with three strikeouts; freshman Jake Cook tossed the final inning.
  • Four different Panthers again had two hits in the game, and McCracken led with two RBI.

UP NEXT

  • The teams will wrap up the three-game series with a single game tomorrow at 1 p.m.
