READING, Pa. – Freshman right-hander Christian Huckfeldt (Ambler, Pa./Upper Dublin) tossed six shutout innings for his first collegiate victory as The University of Scranton baseball team hung on to knock off Albright, 7-6, on Wednesday at Kelchner Field.
Huckfeldt was dominant in his six innings of work, allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out six. He allowed just one runner to reach scoring position and retired the final six batters he faced.
The Royals (6-7) scored two runs in each of the first three innings and added a single run in the fourth to build a 7-0 lead. Albright (3-9) began to chip away with two runs in the seventh, then scored three in the eighth to pull within striking distance. The Lions then pushed a run across in the ninth to pull within one with the bases loaded and one out. But Royals lefty David Chromey (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) came through with a strikeout and a looper to second to end the game and earn his second save of the season.
Senior right fielder Zach Dignam (Bridgewater, N.J./Immaculata) finished the day 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base, and junior catcher Dan Hansen (Helena, Mont./Helena) also had three hits, including a double, drove in a run and scored a run. Senior left fielder Brian Healy (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) singled and doubled, drove in two, scored a run and stole a base, and sophomore infielder Brad Schneider (Ambler, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) had two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
Scranton is back in action on Wednesday when the Royals complete their Landmark Conference series with Elizabethtown with a single game at 3:30 p.m. at Connell Park. The teams split a doubleheader to open the series this past Saturday.
