LYNN, Mass. – University of Maine at Farmington baseball (2-1) sophomore Riley Chickering (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford) helped his own cause on Sunday by allowing only two earned runs on the hill and hit a two-run double in a 8-4 non-conference loss at Fisher College (9-12).
The Falcons jumped out to a 2-0 lead after RBI hits in the first and fifth inning, but had a big inning in the seventh inning with four runs on three hits to push the advantage to 6-0. In the eighth inning, Fisher tacked on two more runs with a pair of RBI singles.
In their last at-bats, the Beavers put on their rally caps and tried to force the game into extra innings. The rally started with a leadoff walk by Nick Attaliades-Ryan(Otisfield, Maine/Oxford) and then Jordan Croteau (So. Paris, Maine/Oxford Hills) followed with a single. After both runners moved into scoring position on a passed ball, Chickering stepped up and crushed a double off the left field fence and only missed a three-run homerun by a few feet.
Mark Leahy (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding) kept the line moving with a single andTaylor Lockhart (Hallowell, Maine/Hall-Dale) came through with an RBI single. The Beavers added two more runs with groundouts to narrow the gap, 8-4.
Chickering started on the hill for the Beavers and pitched six innings. The sophomore fanned six Falcons and surrendered two runs on four hits.
