BOSTON, Mass. – Junior transfer Dave Murphy (Plymouth, Mass.) erupted for three doubles and three RBI to lead baseball to a 12-1 win over Worcester State University Thursday evening in a rain soaked affair at Monan Park.

THE BASICS

UMass Boston 12, Worcester State University 1

UMass Boston (6-6)
Worcester State U. (6-7)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Along with Murphy's offensive explosion, the Beacons got six tremendous innings from freshman pitcher Fernando Burgos (Hyde Park, Mass.).  The young righty earned his first collegiate victory, after allowing just one run, unearned, on three hits.  He also struck out two and walked just three to give the Beacons one of the best outings on their home field.

Murphy finished the day 3-for-5 with the three runs batted in and also accounted for two of the Beacons 12 runs.  Lionel Danielson (St. Croix, Virgin Islands) was just as solid going 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored.  He also had a double in the non-conference victory as well.  Anthony Searles (Shelton, Conn.) also got in on the action, as the junior catcher also plated three runs to cap-off a strong showing for the middle of the Beacons order.

Murphy gave the Beacons their first run of the day in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double to left center, which plated Dan Mantoni (Northbridge, Mass.).  In the third, Searles and Danielson each drove in a run, while Chris Fowler (Barnstable, Mass.) made it a four-run game as she knocked in a run thanks to an error by the Lancers' left fielder.

The Beacons would continue to pound Worcester State's pitchers, as they tacked on four more runs in the fourth with Murphy hitting a two run double, while Danielson crushed a two run single through the left side.

A RBI double by Mantoni in the sixth all but secured the win for the Beacons, as Worcester State mustered up their only run of the night in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by John Boyd.

Searles and Ryan Olivo (Rochester, N.Y.) put the final nails in the coffin as Searles ripped a two-run single to deep center, while Olivo knocked in the Beacons final run on a single up the middle.

Sal Frosceno (Derby, Conn.) and Manny Garcia (Boston, Mass.), closed out the final three innings, and combined for two strikeouts, while only surrendering two hits respectively.

Tyler Barrie was handed the loss, his third, after allowing four runs on four hits through three innings of work.  The starter did strikeout five, but it was not enough for the Lancers.

  • Burgos' six innings tied his season high from March 15 against SUNY Brockport
