LEXINGTON, Va. - Washington and Lee University's Chadwick Feeley totaled three RBI as Guilford College fell twice to Washington and Lee in Saturday afternoon's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader. The Generals took game one, 2-0, and held off a Guilford rally to take the nightcap, 4-3.
Washington and Lee's Tom Concklin (5-0) and Danny Devereux combined for the three-hitter in game one as Concklin struck out six batters while walking two in seven innings. Devereux claimed his sixth save of the season in a two-inning effort where he struck out two and walked two.
The Quakers (12-14, 2-8 ODAC) tested Concklin early by loading the bases with two outs after Andrew Brann and Joe Metts led off the top of the second inning with a pair of singles, but Concklin claimed the final out to retire the Quakers. Feeley plated Washington and Lee's first run with a two-out single in the bottom of the fourth inning and provided insurance for the Generals in the bottom of the eighth inning with a two-out single, but the Quakers induced a line out to strand two Generals on base.
Washington and Lee (19-9, 7-4 ODAC) claimed a 1-0 lead in game two off of a wild pitch with one out after Ryan Weston produced a triple in the bottom of the fourth inning. Game two starting pitcher Eric Yost recovered to claim two consecutive outs to end the inning. Washington and Lee rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning after Feeley grounded into a fielder's choice to drive in a run and increase the lead. After Washington and Lee added two insurance runs, Guilford attempted a comeback, all with two outs, as Logan Jones hit a two-RBI triple into right-center field to spark the comeback bid. A.J. Girting brought Jones home in the next at-bat with a RBI-single to close the deficit to one run. The Quakers then placed runners on first and second, but Devereux produced a strike out to claim his seventh save of the season and second of the game to close the contest.
Girting produced the Quakers lone multi-hit effort of the afternoon, batting two-for-four in game two. Brann and Metts individually combined for two hits over the doubleheader as Brann finished two-for-seven while Metts finished two-for-eight.
Weston led Washington and Lee at the plate, batting three-for-seven with a triple. Feeley produced two hits on the afternoon, all in game one, to complement his three-RBI effort.
Parks Smithey (1-5) claimed the game one loss for the Quakers in a seven and two-third inning effort where struck out four and walked six in a three-hit effort where two runs were given up. John Todd collected the final out of game one in relief. Eric Yost (1-1) claimed the game-two loss in a seven-inning effort where he struck out one and walked two and gave up just one run on seven hits.
David Van Geluwe (2-1) took the game two win for Washington and Lee in a six-inning two-hit effort.
The Quakers return home Wednesday for a 3 p.m. ODAC contest with Lynchburg College.
