Cortland Defeats Fredonia, 10-2, to Open Weekend SUNYAC Series

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Seth Lamando (Hopewell Junction/Roy C. Ketcham) allowed three hits and no walks and struck out eight in seven scoreless innings as Cortland defeated Fredonia, 10-2, in the first game of a three-game weekend SUNYAC series. The teams will play a doubleheader in Cortland Saturday at noon.

Lamando improved to 4-0 on the season with his effort. Cortland, ranked second nationally in Division III, upped its record to 16-3 overall and 2-2 in the SUNYAC.

Justin Teague (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI and Steven Figueroa (Bronx/St. Raymond's) went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI to lead Cortland's 13-hit attack. Nick Hart (Fredonia) was 2-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch, RBI and two runs scored and Conrad Ziemendorf (Penfield/Webster Schroeder) was 1-for-3 with two walks and an RBI.

Fredonia (8-8, 2-2 SUNYAC) was led by Robert Weigand, who finished 2-for-3. Zachary Jordon started for the Blue Devils and gave up eight runs, four earned, in six innings. He allowed 10 hits and two walks and struck out two.

Cortland struck early with six runs in the bottom of the second. Fabio Ricci (Hawthorne/Westlake) led off with a triple and scored on an Austin Clock (Niskayuna) double. Hart singled in a run and, three batters later, Teague hit an RBI double. The other runs in the frame came on a Paul Dondero (East Islip) RBI fielder's choice and a Figueroa two-run double.

Teague singled in a run in the third to make it 7-0. The Red Dragons added a run in the sixth on a Figueroa RBI double and two in the seventh on RBI singles from Marcos Perivolaris (Mattituck) and Ziemendorf.

Fredonia broke up Cortland's shutout bid in the ninth on a Ciro Frontale RBI single and a Michael Prentice RBI fielder's choice, but the Blue Devils left the bases loaded.
