SEWANEE, Tenn. -- The Covenant baseball team scored a season-high 17 runs on 23 hits to complete a season sweep of regional foe Sewanee 17-8 on Monday afternoon at Montgomery Field.
Over the last two games, Covenant (16-13) has scored 29 runs on 40 hits. The Scots have won five straight games overall and won both meetings with Sewanee this year. Sewanee drops to 3-26 on the year.
Covenant scored early and often in the contest and broke the game wide open with a nine-run fourth inning. Luke Harvey went 4-for-5 with three runs scored, two RBIs and two walks while Devin Cerrato, Trenton Nobles, Z Arima and Perry Rigby had three hits apiece. Caleb Bloye went 2-for-6 with three RBIs, Alex Kerr was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs and Julien Amorelli added two hits in five at-bats.
The Scots scored four times in the first to take an early 4-0 lead, but Sewanee would rally and take a 7-5 lead after three innings. In the fourth, Covenant scored nine runs on seven hits to grab a 14-7 advantage. Rigby had an RBI single sandwiched between bases loaded walks drawn by Kerr and Taylor Bloye. Harvey, Nobles and Caleb Bloye then all produced two-run singles to cap the inning.
Covenant would add two more runs in the fifth when Kerr scored on a balk and Taylor Bloye had a sacrifice fly. Jay Epperson finished off the slugfest with a pinch-hit RBI double in the ninth that plated Donny Lewis.
Drew Bradley (2-0) is credited with the win in relief for Covenant after tossing 4.2 innings allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts. Taylor Bloye and Ray Brooks combined for two shutout innings to seal the win.
Covenant got to Sewanee starter Josh Roberts and reliever Daniel McDonnell (0-1) for a combined 11 runs on 12 hits. Ryan Poole went 3-for-4 to lead the Tigers offensively.
