UW-La Crosse Opens WIAC Play with Doubleheader Sweep

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team opened Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play with a doubleheader sweep of UW-Platteville Saturday afternoon at Copeland Park.  The Eagles won the opener, 10-0, and the nightcap, 14-4.  Both games were eight innings.  UWL, ranked 15th on this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll, improves to 12-5 overall and 2-0 in the WIAC while UW-Platteville falls to 10-7 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

In the opener, Caleb Boushley (3-0) earned the win for UWL, pitching the complete-game shutout.  He went 8.0 innings, allowing four hits with seven strikeouts for his first career shutout. 

The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth with Alex Cordova leading off with a single and scoring on Taylor Kohlwey's two-run home run to right field.  It was Kohlwey's third straight game with a home run and fourth in three games.

UWL added three runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to take a 8-0 lead. Cordova's RBI double in the bottom of the fourth scored Sam Prissel to make it 3-0 and Kohlwey followed with a double to knock in Cordova for a 4-0 lead. Kohlwey later scored on a passed ball to make it 5-0.  Joel Zyhowski and Justin Anderson added RBI singles and Cordova a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to make it 8-0.

Prissel knocked in Travis Buxton-Verstegen with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh for a 9-0 advantage and UWL ended the game by the 10-run rule in the bottom of the eighth on Mitch Sutton's RBI double scoring Alex Brown.

The Eagles finished 17 hits in the opener as eight starters recorded at least one.  Seven different players had at least two hits, including Kohlwey finishing 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBI.  Cordova, Anderson, Prissel, Carter HoffmanBen Morgan and Nate Heili each had two.  Cordova scored two runs with two RBI.

Nathan Fay (1-1) suffered the loss for UW-Platteville, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing nine hits and five runs with one strikeout.  Four different players had a hit for the Pioneers.

In the nightcap, Troy Kenkel (3-1) picked up the victory for UWL.  He went 6.0 innings, allowing four hits while striking out seven.  The Eagles' two starters combined to pitch 14.0 innings Saturday, allowing eight hits and no runs or walk with 14 strikeouts.

UWL took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the second in the nightcap,  Heili's two-run single scored Buxton-Verstegen and Brown for a 2-0 lead while Kohlwey doubled home Heili to make it 3-0.  Anderson's two-run single knocked in Cordova and Kohlwey.  The Eagles added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth as Cordova scored on Anderson's sacrifice fly.   UWL scored twice in the fifth and four times in the sixth to take a 12-0 lead.  Seth Feldman and Cordova had run-scoring singles in the fifth while Cordova drew a bases-loaded walk, Kohlwey added an RBI single and Sutton a two-run double in the sixth.

UW-Platteville got on the board with four runs in the top of the seventh on Colin DeBoer's fielder's choice to score Zack Iverson; Casey Schroeder's two-run double to knock in DeBoer and George Jester and Evan Greco's run-scoring single to score Schroeder.

The Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to secure the victory.  Sutton's RBI single scored Cordova and Prissel's fielder's choice knocked in Kohlwey with the final run of the game.

UWL totaled 21 hits in the nightcap as eight starters had at least one.  Kohlwey, Brown and Heili each finsihed 4-for-5 with two runs.  Kohlwey and Heili each had two RBI.  Cordova went 3-for-4 with four runs and two RBI while Sutton finished with three RBI and Anderson with two.

The Eagles hit .487 (38-of-78) in the doubleheader while scoring their 24 runs.  UWL totaled 14 extra-base hits, including 13 doubles.

Caleb Kaufmann (0-1) took the loss for UW-Platteville, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing 11 hits, eight runs (seven earned) and two walks with one strikeout.  The Pioneers finished with seven hits as Schroeder went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Greco 2-for-4 with one RBI.

UWL and UW-Platteville with play another doubleheader Sunday, April 10 starting at noon at Copeland Park.
